Turnbull humiliated for thinking he could outsmart Donald Trump, Andrew Bolt writes

MALCOLM Turnbull thought he could outsmart Donald Trump and trap him into taking 1250 of our boat people.

Huge mistake, and now he’s been humiliated.

There is no surprise that an angry Trump attacked Turnbull in their call at the weekend and hung up halfway through, after just 25 minutes.

What did Turnbull expect?

This political disaster was always on the cards from the moment Turnbull announced, on November 13 last year, that he’d signed a deal with then US president Barack Obama to take our boat people detained on Nauru and Manus Island.

That was very dumb because just five days earlier Trump had been unexpectedly elected the next president, having campaigned hard against exactly this kind of thing.

Trump had made it perfectly clear that he was against taking in alleged refugees from jihadist countries without at least “extreme vetting”. Turnbull knew this. In fact, he’d planned to announce his Obama arrangement early this year, but after Trump’s win rushed it forward in an apparent attempt to present Trump with a fait accompli — a done-deal the new President would not dare undo.

Trump had no choice but to back off. The Post had reported him accusing Turnbull of wanting to send him more “Boston bombers”, and he could hardly now tell the American voters he was happy to take them.

So Trump instead tweeted: “Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!”

Turnbull has a very nervous wait now to see if his boat people “solution” will survive. He’s also learned a very hard lesson: don’t try messing with Trump.

Trump has no obligation to take these people. This was Obama pooping in the pool before he left it for President Trump.

Refugees are enormously expensive. They get immediate government benefits, housing, lawyers, etc.

President Trump should announce he is choosing to take care of our vets with the money and say NO!

McLame and Lievin need to both be hanging from convenient lamp posts! They are both traitors/seditionists. I find it difficult to believe that there are posters here that actually like Lievin.

Not sure the scenario, but I think Trump said he would honor the deal, then the Post spills the story to make Trump look bad, and that point he says, “We’re looking at the deal.”

Bottom line, this guy Turnbull thought he’d have a nice little chat chat with Trump, talk two minutes about the refugees and move on. Trump would not have any of it, and hung up on the guy after 25 minutes.

Don’t blame him. I mean why would you enter into an agreement with Obama on or about 11/14/17 after the election. This was a chicken shit behind the scenes move on Turnbull’s part.

If there is one thing we learned over this last year it is, although it came as a surprise to us all mark Levin is actually a moronic dunce - positively beckish. To think I’ve wasted time reading his books doh

Trump did not leak the phone call, Turnbull did.

Isn’t amazing how stupid these Congress people are. The cabinet sessions shows this. Elizabeth Warren etc. Asking the dumbest questions, turning everything to Lesbian/Gay issues.

Then you have McCAin constantly getting the facts wrong and doing and saying the wrong thing.

You’re spot on. I used to listen to “The Great ONe.” He had us all fooled. Does Hannity have anything to do with him?

Glenn Beck also showed what a shithe*d he is. We should have known this after he trashed Newt.

So my guess is looking more accurate...it was Turnbull that leaked the story...the twists and turns took on a life of their own in the hands of the media!

I remember when Levin first came on the air. There were a lot of promos of him as a "great conservative thinker." Listened to about a half hour of him, and the shouting and "get off the line you big dope" didn't win me over. A lot of these guys believe what they're paid to believe. Levin was a never Trumper because the people who pay him are never Trumpers. Same thing with Krystol and Will.

Levin never won anyone over to actual conservatism. He did push a lot of people on the edge back to the left.

I say let Trump submit the deal as though it were a Treaty to the Senate and let them vote on it...should take 3 or 4 months...about the time his immigration ban orders will expire!

The agreement was made earlier in the year, the PM tried to rush it because of the election results!

I’d like to see Pres. Trump turn this on both Turnbull and also Canada’s Trudeau — make some public statement that Trudeau says he wants all the refugees and so the USA will let Canada take this batch.

It would show up not only Turnbull for his tricks and posturing, but also Trudeau for posturing about how Canada is so morally superior to Trump’s USA etc.

After all, it was PM Trudeau who just made his passionate statement about how Canada is always wide open to refugees, let him “walk his talk” now.

Australia keeps them out of their mainland but expected us to take them? Media completely ignores this part of the story.

Where do you see that. All reports indicate that the deal was struck on or about NOvember 14th. Turnbull was going to announce it at the beginning of this year, but pushed it up.

OTOH, who knows? We don’t have a reliable media anymore.

Here’s the way they do it. News comes in, and it’s filtered to put the worst light on the president, then dispersed.

It’s also the TV pundits.

I’m watching Chris Matthews, the night the SCOTUS was to be announced. What does he comment on? The Trump brothers being there, asking what are they doing there.

Then he says, looks like the Romanov family.

Why can’t they be there?
