I froze the first man in liquid nitrogen 50 years ago - and he WILL be brought back to life [TR]

It was late evening on January 12, 1967 and three men were laboring over the body of psychology professor James Bedford, who had just died from kidney cancer at the age of 72.

But while the manner of Bedford's death - in bed at a hospital in Glendale, California, was not unusual - what happened next certainly was.

Bedford was about to become the world's first cryopreserved human being – and now lies suspended in liquid nitrogen in a vault in Scottsdale, Arizona. Although the 72-year-old said before his death that he didn't expect ever to be revived, scientist Robert Nelson, one of the trio who carried out the preservation process, says he is confident that Bedford will one day live again.

'When we froze Bedford, man had never been on the moon, there had never been a heart transplant, there was no GPS, no cellphones,' said Nelson, now 80, in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com.

I would have loved to have been one of individuals. I think I would have made the most of my Tim 500 years in the future with little complaint.

They cant even explain what is the key ingredient, beyond a human body, that makes life. Without that, there is no way to revive people.

Thank you for the description of how cryogenics would need to work and which cells remain viable longer. I was in cancer detection and appreciate reading the info. Especially about the supposedly living cells in that vial.

This makes me think of The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar from the movie "Tales of Terror."

Dying from a painful disease, M. Valdemar (Vincent Price) employs a hypnotist, Mr. Carmichael (Basil Rathbone), to alleviate his suffering by putting him under various trances. He then remains between the world of the living and the dead. Originally written by Edgar Allen Poe.

What if this guy is frozen between Hell and Earth? Yarrrrg.

Delusional. Either dead or alive. If dead, no possibility of coming back to life. If alive, horrible suffering for 50 years.

“Scottsdale, Arizona”

If I were going to keep a freezer running 24/7, I’d pick a cooler place to start!

I wonder how many other stupid decisions this guy made along the way.

Doesn’t bode well for the meat popsicle.

Perhaps when Christ died on the cross to give us eternal
life, just maybe He gave it to all; just that some do not
accept Him and reap what they sow. (Otherwise, that is a
very puzzling verse.)

I don’t see how anyone who, having been dead can expect to thaw out and “return to life”. Return to death, maybe.

Precisely. In order for this to have any chance whatsoever, you would need to start with someone who is still alive. Starting from dead, and in this case likely very depleted before death, all you have is a frozen dead guy.

I think the big “A” state up north would have been better suited in case of a malfunction. ;)

I’m sure you noticed that freezing animal flesh is a bit different from freezing soft plant matter.

I doubt that freezing a body will produce anything but a well preserved corpse at some future date. However, assuming it might be possible to reanimate these frozen bodies in the future, why would anyone want to or be willing to pay the cost of the process? These defrosted people would be totally ignorant of life in the new times, have no particular knowledge or skills of value in the new society and would be little more than interesting research for historians. Imagine if someone from the 1600s were revived today. Would they be able to cope with living in the 21st Century? Even a revived Shakespear or Galileo would be little more than curiosities.

Also consider the person being revived. Everyone they ever knew would be dead and even if they had far distant descendants would those descendants even care about a 15th generation removed relative being back?

Human cells are mostly water. Water expands when it freezes. The increased volume within the cell would cause the cellular membrane to rupture, spilling the contents of the cell and killing it.

What you will have when you thaw this body is a puddle of DNA goop with some bones and hair in it.
