Here’s what your guacamole — and other groceries — would cost if we had a Mexico border tax

It was a claim that President Donald Trump repeated on the campaign trail: that he would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it. In his first few days in office, Trump appeared to make good on one portion of that promise, by signing an executive order for the planning and building of that wall to proceed.

But the cost for that wall will temporarily be borne by Americans, Trump said, and Mexico’s government insists it will not pay for the construction on the border. On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico which suggested that until Trump’s promised reimbursement from the Mexicans materializes, Americans would pay for the border wall with their pocketbooks.

The White House clarified afterwards that Trump’s suggestion was an option rather than an official proposal, but social media users quickly questioned the possible uptick in one particular grocery item: avocados, of which 80 percent come from

America’s southern neighbor. Though the price of the guacamole’s main ingredient varies from market to market, the creamy green fruit usually costs a few dollars. Assuming a $3 cost, a 20 percent tax would increase the price to $3.60.

Takis, a common packaged food snack, would go from $6 to $7.20, the Washington Post reported. Other staples like tomato paste would also see only a slight markup, from about $1.20 to $1.44.

I’m more worried about the prices of almonds and walnuts going through the roof for the sake of a couple of fish in a river near San Francisco.

——Takis is only consumed by the illegals.——

LOL....

Having been in the snack business, that’s not true.

Hispanics do eat them more than any other group, but it’s not limited to illegals...

They are way to spicy for my tastes...

No, what happens is that you find cheaper alternatives that did not come from Mexico.

This is the correct answer.

What about Kalifornia avocados? A lot of the things we import from Mexico can be grown here by American farmers. Plus, we don’t have to bump up the tax on foodstuffs.....they assume it has to be uniform in order to make their meme work.

Tecate for me.
It’s $7.50 cheaper per case than Corona.

I don't think he's talking about taxing everything coming in from Mexico, he wants to tax US owned manufacturing products that are manufactured off shore, then shipped back to the USA, cutting out an American worker.

Mark Levin is ranting that we, the purchasers, will pay the tax. No we won't, because we won't buy a product that costs 20% more. We will buy a product made in the USA that doesn't have the tax.

The price just needs to be high enough that Americans can make a profit and we’ll see allot of used to be Mexican only produce and products produced here in the US. Same thing as oil, get the per barrel price high enough and we drill like crazy.

Since the cartels have their hands in the Mexican avocado trade, good riddance.

I have fresh garlic every year from a very small area. Pull the plants when the stalk dry down to the bulbs. Keep the large bulbs for cooking and break up the smaller bulb and throw them back in the dirt. Planted one bulb 7 years ago and they just keep coming up.

Well I am here to tell you what about all that imported Mexican goods we see in the super markets. These wetbacks are really going to get hit hard and I for one will be glad to see it.

Maybe once this aisle is so overpriced it will make room for more AMERICAN PRODUCE.

Thank goodness for farmers markets. In my dreams....

Saying consumers will pay ALL of the tax is as silly as saying the consumer will pay NONE of the tax.

And basing the tax on an inflated retail price rather than the wholesale import cost. In the case of a reporter it's not silly, it's incompetence. Or deliberate deception.

If Trump said the tax was going to local school districts "for the children", a common ploy, the media would hate that too.
