This is a bad idea that will raise prices for American consumers. I hope Congressional Republicans oppose this.

This is nothing but a tax increase. I hope the GOP can find the spine to oppose this.

Do you know who’s going to pay this? The American people are.

The hope here is that this tax would cause the price of Mexican products be so high that the choice would be buy American. My hope is that the illegals would only buy Mexican thereby help building the wall.

Mr. Spicer said the 20 percent tax on annual Mexican imports would raise $10 billion a year

Ummmm....20% of $300 billion is $60 billion a year.

I'm amazed. Static Analysis doesn't work for tax policy...didn't you hear the news?

When RATs talk about how they'll raise $$$ by tweaking the tax code we realize that things won't stay the same..."static..." We realize that behavior and the facts on the ground will change, that increasing taxes 20% will not bring in 20% more revenue.

Maybe just a rhetorical question...why would behavior not change in this case? The success of the policy depends upon predicting it will.

Since Mexico is paying for the wall, we should BUILD THE CADILLAC OF ALL WALLS.

Possibly, but that won't last long as more and more companies fill the void by competing in America. And the benefits from having jobs in the US will far outweigh any costs that are passed on.

If Americans boycotted Mexican and illegal alien pushing businesses, this problem would solve itself for the most part.

Americans are fat, cheap, and lazy - and part of the problem.

I can think of at least 10 companies off the top of my head that use illegal labor in my area.

I hope the tariff applies to produce. Much of our produce in supermarkets, including almost all tomatoes, comes from Mexico—and I refuse to buy it because I love my health too much. Maybe the tariff will induce retailers to get their produce from the good old USA.

Add up the money that was recently sent to Iran.

Add up the money sent to Pakistan, India, etc.,

Add up the money Obama’s spent on Vacation Junkets.

Add up the money wasted in Welfare fraud.

Yeah, the time for talk is over....... Let’s get the Wall Done!

Mexico won't pay the tariff, American consumers will. This is true whether a consumer purchases Mexican imports at a 20% higher price, or instead purchases American made products, as our manufacturers can be counted on to jack up their prices once Mexican manufacturers who compete with them are hobbled with a 20% tariff.

The primary reason for a tariff is that it enables the exploitation of the domestic consumer by a process indistinguishable from sheer robbery.<\I>

I no longer trust anything from the NY Times. That aside, Trump is throwing out a negotiating chip. A 20% tariff on all imports is insane.

Slap a 25% surcharge on all cash remittances to Mexico. That alone will finance the wall AND make coming to America too unprofitable to consider.

Just fine.

1) Other nations will compensate
2) We get energy from Me-hee-co that we can substitute for.

Doubt there is much else they make that we have to have. We’ll live.
