Police statement - number of people injured, exact circumstances still being determined. TV news reports show heavily armed police (body armour and long arms) in central Melbourne - right near Bourke Street Mall which is a pedestrian mall right in the centre of the city with major department stores and many other retail shops nearby.

Car chase began near Federation Square (which was named as a target in prevented Christmas Day terrorist plot). Approximately 12 injured. Man in custody. Shots fired. Some reports say one person shot.

Yes - and events started near main train station in Melbourne.
People being told to shelter in place. Buildings in lockdown. Looking on TV, main streets in central Melbourne look blocked by police cars.

Normally, the press and police are pretty good on naming ethnicities etc, but it can take some time, and there have been some exceptions.
