Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld: Melania Trump’s Dynamic Duo
Women's Wear Daily ^ | 1/17/2017 | Bridget Foley

Karl Lagerfeld likely will join Ralph Lauren in dressing the incoming first lady.

Who will dress Melania?

With the big event just days away, two names churning about the rumor mill make all the sense in the world. As my colleague Rosemary Feitelberg reported on Monday, one of those names is Ralph Lauren. The other: Karl Lagerfeld. Yes, that Karl Lagerfeld.

If accurate, that rock-star combo will transport Melania Trump to Inauguration Day fashion Nirvana. Her wardrobe choices for the swearing in of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States, and later, for the inaugural balls, are the most loaded fashion matter ever to involve the White House. That includes whether Jackie Kennedy enlisted Oleg Cassini to “interpret” European clothes, whether Nancy Reagan “borrowed” too liberally from designers, and the freedom-of-the-press brouhaha that resulted when WWD’s John Fairchild refused supplied, embargoed details about Luci Baines Johnson’s wedding gown, preferring to report out and publish in advance a sketch of the Priscilla Boston dress.

Unlike the weird car covers and tablecloths that adorn our current “lovely” first lady, Melania would look like a million dollars in a gunny sack or a Dollar General creation.

Okay...time for a factual history/fashion lesson!

In the summer of '60, Glamor magazine ran pictures of 10 American designers ideas for what Jackie Kennedy should wear, should JFK become president, since it was well known, that she ONLY wore European designer stuff.

It was kind of a contest, Cassini won, and yes, he did dress her for most things, when she was Flotus.

I’m not a follower of fashion.

But, I have heard of Ralph and Karl.

Never heard of those who have refused to design/dress for the Trump women.

What does that tell us?

Hmmmmmm.......

Didn't Jackie wear Halston as well, or was that Nancy?

Who designed the outfit(s) with the pillbox hat? Was that Cassini?

Well, Lagerfeld and Lauren have both been at the top of their game in the fashion world for decades. So, a lot more people have heard of them. It also speaks to their great talent to stay at the top for so long.

I think Halston dressed Nancy who always looked fabulous. Cassini dressed Jackie.

Ralph Lauren....blah.

i love him! i have the nicest RL shirts... crisp, classic, sexy... in fact, i am at this moment wearing a black skinny turtleneck with a tiny white RL on the neck... i love it! i like his shirts/blouses for women because they are high quality and they fit perfectly (form-fitting) because they are detailed...

Dear old Oleg designed most of the outfits Jackie wore. But the pink suit Jackie wore, that got blood spattered, was Channel, which she wore a lot of.

No, Halston didn't do anything for Jackie and I don't know if he did anything for Nancy.

Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, and Bill Blass, are the American designers who have dressed most of the modern ( but NOT the MOOCH, who likes WEIRD crap, that doesn't fit her )FLOTUSES.

Bill Blass and Oscar de la Renta did a LOT Of Nancy Reagan’s clothes and I don’t remember Halston doing any at all. I could be wrong but I bet I’m not.
