2,000 GM workers to lose jobs on Trump Inauguration Day
CNN Money ^ | January 18th, 2017 | by Heather Long

Robert Sheridan is a 40-year-old GM worker who voted for Donald Trump. He can barely contain his excitement about Inauguration Day, even though it will be a rough day for him on a personal level.

He's one of 2,000 GM factory workers losing their jobs on Friday, the same day that Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president.

Sheridan -- and thousands like him -- are desperately hoping Trump will save their jobs.

"Please help us in Lordstown," says Sheridan, a soft-spoken Midwesterner with three kids. "This is a great middle class job. You can't find one better around here."

These are GM's first layoffs in six years. About 1,200 workers in Lordstown, Ohio (where Sheridan works) are getting the ax and another 800 in Lansing, Michigan -- both key states that led to Trump's victory. Given the vote totals, many of these workers likely voted for Trump, breaking ranks with the United Automobile Workers union that backed Hillary Clinton.

Trump appeared to hear their outcry. In early January, he slammed GM in a tweet.

"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border," Trump tweeted.

Didn’t GM’s female CEO mouth off to Trump? Sad to see their workers punished for that, but those are the breaks.

What's the rest of the story, CNN?

Are you fabricating, telling half-truths, or distorting?

You are going to have to go full Cuba and remanufacture old vehicles. Pick a type you like and concentrate on multiple instances of that one vehicle.

and this has WHAT to do with Trump...as it is intended to imply?

Not a damn thing. WARN Act specifies these people were notified 60 days ago they were being laid off. It's much more devious CNN Fake news trying to conflate the things that Trump has done to encourage investment in the United States and those things out of his control.

But they media won't make that distinction. They are adopting the British NHS model of thinking where the blame for every patient for want of a bed is laid at the feet of politicians.

When Cuba gets it’s freedom we should trade one running used FORD for every one of their classic Russian maintained oldies. Leave GM out. Let Ford be the National vehicle.

There's a fair amount of that already going on. Not historic restorations, but remanufacturing as you say. Modern brakes, climate control, stereo, seat belts and shoulder harnesses. Otherwise refreshed to better than new.

GM’s Lordstown, Ohio and Lansing, Michigan plants build slow-selling cars sold by Chevrolet and Cadillac. GM said it will furlough the employees when it cuts the third shift at both plants in January.

GM says the furlough is a response to what the company believes will be a continued shift from cars to crossovers and trucks. The Lordstown plant builds the compact Chevrolet Cruze, whose U.S. sales through October were down 20%. The Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS, whose sales were down 17% through October.

You remember wrong-headed government interference and anti-business media attention. The Corvair was proven in court to be as safe as any other car on the road, and was a great car. The Pinto didn’t “explode” any worse than other small economy cars of the early 70’s. What problem there was, was due to much larger bolts piercing the gas tank, which ironically were required for the much larger federal impact “safety” bumpers mandated in 1973.

The problem ain’t computer cars. The problem is gubmint cars. Get the gubmint out of car making and let the market decide. I want the best made luxury within my budget car, I care less about whether or not it was made by some damn union.

Does the UAW still own a big chunk of GM? It was in their health/pension trust, but I can’t find out if they sold it. Anyone here know?

My mom had a Corvair. My brother had a Pinto.

Today’s vehicles are safer.

Yes, today’s vehicles are safer. The Corvair was every bit as safe as any other car of it’s time. So was the Pinto.

GM to Add or Keep 7,000 US Jobs, Make $1B Factory Investment

In all, the Detroit automaker said it will create or keep 7,000 jobs in the next few years, including about 2,000 at factories. Another 5,000 new positions will be created at its auto financing arm and to develop advanced technology, electric and autonomous vehicles and information technology.

If this is the case, why a massive layoff now?

Their margin on a car built in Mexico is 3x one built in the US. All labor, regulatory (safety and permitting) and environmental savings.

And the government waived federal taxes for Government Motors, while Ford & Chrysler had to pay. Talk about picking winners, all on the taxpayers’ dime. Now they fire Americans the week Pres. Trump takes office. No wonder workers have turned against Democrats.
