SANTA CRUZ >> More than 120 women and a few men took a moment to breathe in and quietly exhale in unison.

“Your brain needs oxygen. Most of us, when we get nervous, we take a deep breath and we forget to exhale and keep breathing,” self-defense instructor Leonie Sherman said to those gathered.

Group members took turns hurling offensive comments and getting in each others’ faces, offering a sort of worst-case scenario for Saturday’s events. After practicing turning away, ignoring their antagonists, smiling politely, asking distracting questions and even breaking off unwanted physical contact, one woman said she was so caught up in remembering techniques that she did not even hear the insults flying her way.
