Paris (AFP) - France warned Sunday of "serious consequences" if Donald Trump moves to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital as representatives from 70 countries met in Paris to try to revive stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.
Neither Israel nor the Palestinians are represented at the conference, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed as "futile".
Opening the meeting, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the international community wanted to "forcefully reiterate that the two-state solution is the only solution possible" to the seven-decade-old conflict.
He also warned the US president-elect against relocating the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in a move to recognise the contested city as Israel's capital.
Ayrault said such a move, which Trump promised during campaigning, would have "extremely serious consequences" and predicted the incoming US leader would find it impossible to implement.
"When you are president of the United States, you cannot take such a stubborn and such a unilateral view on this issue. You have to try to create the conditions for peace," he told France 3 TV.
Both Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas have been invited to meet with President Francois Hollande to discuss the conclusions of the Paris talks.
Abbas, who has backed the conference, is expected to travel to Paris in the coming weeks but Netanyahu has rejected the offer, French diplomats said.
The Israeli premier on Sunday again heaped criticism on the conference, calling it "futile."
"It was coordinated between the French and the Palestinians with the aim of imposing upon Israel conditions that are incompatible with our national needs," he told a weekly cabinet meeting.
The Paris conference is mainly symbolic, but comes at a crucial juncture for the Middle East, five days before Trump is sworn in as US president.

The French ‘warning of serious consequences’ won’t scare Trump because not only does he have a spine and balls, but Trump also does NOT play by the usual political playbook, as many are finding out to their detriment. The world is accustomed to 8 years of the coward Omuslim ... they’ll have to make some major adjustments to their thinking in dealing with President Trump.
Did ever-so-proper Minister Ayrault “consult” with PEOTUS Trump before issuing his “unilateral” warning?

These "peace talks" have been going on ever since I can remember. Isn't it time to accept that the Palestinians do not want peace and to drop this charade?
It is sad to see France adopt the anti-Israel line. So many French people risked their lives to save Jewish people during WWII--how far that country has descended!

“Impossible” ? I don’t think he knows what that word means.
If Trump is willing to move the the Embassy, and Israel is willing to allow it, what could France do to stop it? Nothing.
The United States spent blood and gold to liberate Europe, and then spent more to rebuild. And then at great expense had troops along their borders to protect them. And what did Europe give back in return? Derision, ridicule and hate.
I think France and the rest of Europe should forget about Israel and concentrate on the invasion of Europe by Muslims. At some point in the near future they will be fighting for their lives.
What we SHOULD do is move our embassy in France, and into Lyon or some similar city - in order to RECOGNIZE the legitimacy of the Muslim transition taking place in France. After all, what right to we have to ignore the LEGITIMATE NEEDS of the growing Muslim minority within French borders.
Same with Sweden: Move it from Stockholm to Malmo.
What will they do, throw their TAMS at Trump??
