I Abstained From Sex for a Year to Donate Blood (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2017 | JAY FRANZONE

IT shouldn’t be a big deal that I gave blood this week, but it is. To do it, I had to give up all forms of sex for a year. The reason: I’m gay.

With what we know today about the disease, it’s a stupid reason.

In 1985, in the early days of the AIDS crisis, the United States Food and Drug Administration recommended that men who had sex with other men be prohibited from donating blood indefinitely. This policy made sense at the time. In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition. And we can now detect what had been an elusive virus within seven to 28 days of infection, using nucleic acid testing.

In 2015, the agency modified the lifetime ban and allowed men who had sex with men to donate blood if they had abstained from sex for one year. This revision followed several years of study after an advisory committee found the lifetime ban “suboptimal.”

But this one-year blanket policy, which depends on the honesty of the would-be donor, still falls short by failing to consider a potential donor’s individual risk factors, an approach some other countries follow with success. As a result, this prohibition, which the American Public Health Association said “is not based in science but appears to be modeled after other countries’ choices and fears,” effectively forbids as many as two million potential donors to give blood, according to an analysis published in 2014 by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law.

This past summer, the F.D.A. began the process of reconsidering its one-year policy.

It’s the hemophiliac elimination feature of Obamacare.

And they will DEMAND that the government spend more money to cure them so they don’t have to give up their perverted lifestyle.

Even if he did, STDs don't go away with a year of abstinence.

Plus, gays are much more promiscuous than their hetero counterparts. Even the nicest most monogamous and faithful heterosexuals can't go more than a couple of weeks if their partner is available.

I’ve been banned from donating blood because I ate beef in Britain thirty years ago.

I remember too. I have been in the lab for a very long time. It still scares me that my daughter received massive transfusions last June to save her life, because I remember the professional journals filled with innocents contracting a lifetime of disease. It’s baaaaack, along with a resurgence in hepatitis, syphilis, resistant shig (not a blood borne path). I fully expect all the data to be swept under the rug, because no lives matter to the agenda pushers.

I’m permanently barred from donating blood and I’m a Universal Donor O-.

Why?

Because I served on active duty in Turkey in 1988-90 so I might have Mad Cow Disease

And I can’t go a year without sex and be reinstated.

I’m a victim of a militaryphobic bias against my very blood!

I hereby demand reparations.

Why do we need so much blood donated anyway ? President Clinton used to fill the blood banks with blood from FELONS IN PRISON. Why don’t we just do that all the time ?

I, too, have been told I cannot donate blood. What’s the big deal?

I don’t want to shove it in anyone else’s face.

Isn't that a major component of male homosexuality ?

I’ve donated blood a number of times and I don’t ever remember anyone asking me if I had sex with men as part of the preparation.

Maybe the medical staff are pretty good judges of character.

I got two blood transfusions in my life: one was from my mother shortly after birth; the other was after coronary artery bypass grafts. I was reluctant to receive the second; and, indeed, I felt strangely after receiving it, although suffering no long-term effects.

WHY is donating blood to be considered “a right”?????

Same reason that getting a blowie from an intern young enough to be your daughter, while on the phone conducting international relations in the office of the White House is considered "a right".

“I, too, have been told I cannot donate blood. What’s the big deal?”

I’m not complaining, I perfectly understand their reasoning. There’s no test for the prions short of an autopsy. By the time I had to quit I’d already give 3 gallons so I’ve done my bit.

And why the overpowering desire to give blood in the first place?

Same reason a homosexual couple would go to a Christian Bakery to get a cake for their wedding.

Oh, yeah, the drive stronger than hunger for food.... people would abstain for a year from it in order to donate blood.... suuuuuuure....

I agree, it is stupid. If you have ever been an active homosexual, you should NEVER be allowed to donate blood, no matter how long you abstain.

Assessment: almost no chance of being true.

If this guy can't get past the first sentence without telling a lie, then explaining why he's lying in the second sentence ("I have an axe to grind so I'm being dramatic") then I don't care to read his baloney.

I also abstained from sex all year, but it was not my choice.

You could become a Muslim. Then you can have sex with your wife, your children, your neighbors, Christians, anyone at all or anything at all, WITHOUT their permission.
