I Abstained From Sex for a Year to Donate Blood (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2017 | JAY FRANZONE

IT shouldn’t be a big deal that I gave blood this week, but it is. To do it, I had to give up all forms of sex for a year. The reason: I’m gay.

With what we know today about the disease, it’s a stupid reason.

In 1985, in the early days of the AIDS crisis, the United States Food and Drug Administration recommended that men who had sex with other men be prohibited from donating blood indefinitely. This policy made sense at the time. In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition. And we can now detect what had been an elusive virus within seven to 28 days of infection, using nucleic acid testing.

In 2015, the agency modified the lifetime ban and allowed men who had sex with men to donate blood if they had abstained from sex for one year. This revision followed several years of study after an advisory committee found the lifetime ban “suboptimal.”

But this one-year blanket policy, which depends on the honesty of the would-be donor, still falls short by failing to consider a potential donor’s individual risk factors, an approach some other countries follow with success. As a result, this prohibition, which the American Public Health Association said “is not based in science but appears to be modeled after other countries’ choices and fears,” effectively forbids as many as two million potential donors to give blood, according to an analysis published in 2014 by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law.

This past summer, the F.D.A. began the process of reconsidering its one-year policy.

I haven’t been back to Europe in a long time but when I go, I’m giving blood. At least our blood is wanted there. I’m an O neg, universal donor. And yet here, they prefer gay hookers. You know, hookers who had a bad year.

Well, I’m a universal donor as well.

I just think they should do more research into mad cow disease. Because there are many of us who could help out but we’re not allowed to.

Take care, FRiend, and happy New Year. :-)

I am still upset that the Red Cross will not take my blood (o-neg) because I lived in the UK. Have not left the US in 15 years. Gave several donations here before that.

Am I a greater risk than a homosexual ?

Do they do the same thing in Canada? It’s rather stupid. If they said it was due to Chernobyl fallout or something like that, fine. But U.K. Prion disease??? I was nowhere near, and didn’t eat food from there! In fact, I was pretty vegetarian at the time.

Happy New Year to you, too! Starting off quite nicely!

Yes, I agree that that is a big part of it, too.

Some have convinced themselves that they are not the ones with the problem. Mental illness often has a hard time recognizing itself in the mirror.

Their judgement cannot and should not be trusted, especially when it comes to the health of innocent people.

Tell that to my husband. :( Guess I'm too old, ugly, whatever, but he has zero interest in me after 26 years of marriage. 😓

OBAMA could have ended the ban, instead he only changed it to “no gay sex for a year prior”. What does that tell you? They know there is an elevated risk, they know people will get sick if every Ru Paul out there starts giving blood.

The above link is just one of the videos that Mark Gungor does. This one is about how pornography. Where the men turn to porno, and prefers it to a real woman. I can't recall if this is the where he talks about how the man needs to initiniate it more. But he also talks about how after the woman says “I have a headache” three or four times in a row - the guy gives up with the woman.

I hate to admit - I get to that point some time. I give up with my wife sometimes. It is easier just not to try anymore.

I merely put out there, that if they (sodomites) want to insist on contaminating the blood supply with their diseases, that they should be liable for the resulting damage.

It was not intended to indicate that I support the idea that they should be allowed to donate blood, but to put the burden on them. If you were to ask them would they support the idea that they should be criminally and civilly liable for the damage they have wrought, what do you think the answer would be? I suspect that they would refuse, and thus it removes the problem of them contaminating the blood supply.

If we stand up and say “no, you can’t donate blood because you are a filthy sodomite” we’re not going to win that argument even if we are correct on the merits.

That's not just a good video, that's a great video.

I can honestly say that I am to the point that if a group of 10's were to parade naked across a stage, I'd have a similar reaction as watching lifestyles of the rich and famous-- "That's very nice, but not something I can have."

OTOH, if my wife touches me in a certain way, looks at me in a certain way or even makes a few select comments, the old flagpole goes up! It doesn't always end with completing the act, but it does ALMOST often enough.

The biggest problem in porn for men, as Gungor points out, is unrealistic expectations. All of the guys have a couple of extra inches (or more) on their copulatory organ, all of the women have a couple extra sizes on their boobs, pubic hair is scarce or even shaved, etc.

Don't know about others, but the pubic hair actually enhances our lovemaking, it doesn't interfere with it. Fact: hair has nerve endings which trigger pleasure points in the brain and glands when ground together.

Don't know about his other videos, but there is a counterpart problem in porn for women a/k/a "romance novels." Men are more visual creatures. Women thrive on feelings and descriptions. These romance novels give women unrealistic expectations in much the same way that porn does the same for men.

Pastor Gungor's BEST line, however, is questioning why we look to the entertainment industry for sex tips when most of them can't even stay married three months.

Another fact: Guys which are getting it regularly even care to look at porn.

More accurately, men who have sex with men shouldn't be allowed to donate blood. It's BEHAVIOR that is risky, not the propensity.

In modern society that is a distinction without a difference. One of the well known characteristics of "gayness" is extreme promiscuity.

First, how can you trust a person’s word?

Absolutely not. A particular subculture of homosexuals actively seek to transfer the virus, (HIV) and there are other components of their subculture actively trying to catch the virus. These are called "bug chasers", and they really are a thing. The evidence demonstrates "bug spreaders" exist too, but the media keeps quiet about that. It damages the narrative that Homosexuals are harmless to society.

Second, doesn’t HIV hide in the body for a long time?. I’m not sure.

It can hide for years, especially if they are using suppression drugs.

As I said, have not given blood since I learned that I may have some tiny risk of mad cow disease because I went to school in France in the 1980s.

I believe mad cow disease has been attributed to misfolded prions which are somehow infectious. If you had it, you would already have been showing symptoms, in my opinion.

I agree, if you're using the political term "gay" (which it is.) This is probably the lion's share of those who embrace this identity.

But I'm generous enough to allow that there are some men who see their same-sex attraction as the pathology that it is, and have never acted on it.
