Michigan man ticketed for warming car in driveway; police chief tells him to ‘drop dead’

A Michigan man is outraged after he was ticketed for heating up his car in his own driveway and then told by the police chief to “drop dead” after he complained to local media.

Taylor Trupiano, who posts on Facebook under the name Nick Taylor, posted a photo of the $128 ticket last week, which he found on his windshield after leaving his car running and unattended in his driveway in Roseville.

“Let’s all take a moment to thank officer dips—t K. Keary for wasting the taxpayer’s money and giving me a ticket for warming up my car in my own damn driveway,” Mr. Trupiano wrote, received more than 13,000 shares.

#59 Correct. The only crime that accorded on that day was the Cops/City’s theft of the 128 dollars disguised as a fine.

Here's what you need to know about Roseville Garth.

First, it's the community of choice for the folks migrating out of the city of Detroit.

That's a good reason I shouldn't be allowed to do what I please with what is mine. Freedom much, HT?

Second, it's the primary target rich environment of the inner city thugs

Well that cinches it. My right to enjoy my property as I see fit should be restricted because of.... "inner city thugs."

I bet a good little statist could use a reason like that to remove pretty much ALL my rights.

Make sure to check your mailbox today.

“stupidity” for not watching it warm up while armed which is totally unnecessary here.

I want to support the police. But too many of them have nothing to do with “protect and serve”, and don’t care about their oath. Little tyrants about either exerting power over others or just interested in gaining revenue.

Absolutely agree with that, police work and dealing with the public takes a very special individual. Sadly the money is not there to get the best possible candidates.

Ticketed for leaving his car running and unattended in his driveway. The headline is a lie and it invalidates the article.

I have not checked the law in this local case, but the car owner may still have gotten the ticket, since the keys were in the car. A simply window smash, and away goes the car. It seems the focus of the ordinance is on car theft.

If the car was unlocked and the key was in the ignition the guy was inviting a theft.

At the hospital where I worked last the entire staff went out and left their cars running in the parking lot while they warmed up. At shift change - and it was too cold to sit in your car. Forget about that!

This is standard practise in northern Michigan. No one here steals them...

If that’s what happened, I agree the ticket was unjustified.

And don’t leave the door of your house unlocked when you walk down the driveway to the mailbox.

Bravo.

The ordinance is bullshit and the chief is a dick. They should stick to fighting actual crimes instead of soaking taxpayers for more $$$.

Yep.

"Michigan ranks high on car-thefts-with-key list"

Vehicle owners in southeastern Michigan have it even worse; Detroit-Warren-Dearborn is the metro area with the second-highest number of this kind of theft nationwide with 4,380 thefts.

It's the stupidity of these people that have caused my auto insurance to sky rocket to over $2,000 per year since I live in this high risk auto insurance zone.

Tell you what Garth, you give the insurance companies the right to deny claims for auto thefts due to the above stupid behavior then I'll also condemn the writing of these tickets.........

"Better not ......."

The man was fortunate it was only the police. He could have faced the wrath of HOA Nazis over violating some obscure neighborhood regulations.

Unlike the opposing example you present as equivalent, auto theft puts others at risk in several ways. Kids could drive away with the cars and get into accidents. Thieves who steal a car can use that car to flee when cops catch up with them and thus result in a dangerous high-speed, light-running car chase. Etc....

Someone would have to be dumb enough to have unsecured weapons stored in an open garage to create an equivalent risk. I would not waste my time sympathizing for such a fool.

So, you want another law restricting insurance contracts before you'll condemn this clearly freedom restricting law?

We have these multitudes of petty, anti-freedom regulations because of statists like you HT. Freedom, it's not for everybody.

easier to knock on the door and tell him the law than to write a ticket

A knock on the door brings no revenue into the city coffers.

Yes freedom is not for idiots like you. Your freedom to be an idiot impacts me. Your car gets stolen and MY insurance rates go up due to you being a fool. If my rates were no affected I could care less what you do.
Suppose a young kid decides that the running car is too much of a temptation and steals it running into others possibly killing them.
Now on to the actions of the cop. I am a former LEO. I would have gotten out knocked on the door and informed the person he was breaking a law.
I would them explain why it was not smart to leave a running car unattended.
If he did it again I would have no problem ticketing him.
