Majority back ban on handguns in checked baggage
YouGov Polls ^ | 10 January 2017 | YouGov Poll

Posted on 01/10/2017 3:09:49 PM PST by backwoods-engineer

Most Americans, including half of independents and Republicans, support a ban on checking handguns into aircraft baggage

In recent years, America has, unfortunately, become used to mass shootings, but the recent mass shooting by an Iraq War veteran in Fort Lauderdale has sparked some concern. In the shooting at the Florida city's airport, the man, Estaban Santiago, had checked a handgun into his baggage. After retrieving it from the carousel he loaded it in a bathroom and then allegedly murdered five people, exposing a weakness in airport security.

The latest research from YouGov finds that most Americans (57%) support a ban on checking handguns into luggage, while only 26% oppose a ban. Support for a ban is strongest among Democrats (72%) but even 49% of independents and Republicans support the measure.

The partisan divide on the issue of handguns on planes is markedly smaller than the divide when it comes to general laws on the sale of handguns. While 73% of Democrats want it to be harder to buy a handgun, only 32% of Republicans agree.

What is the difference? Someone can walk into the terminal, including baggage claim, with a concealed gun. They don’t have to check any baggage.

It was my understanding that checked luggage was held in the cargo hold.

If it is addressing carried on luggage, then I’d have to say no.

All it takes is for one guy to shoot out a window. The end.

There are too many total idiots out there these days.

Guns in checked baggage are NOT accessible during flight. Therefore those guns can not shoot anyone.

On the other hand, bombs with a timer device in checked baggage can bring down the entire aircraft. IIRC, this has already happened a few times in the past.

Quick knee jerk poll taking advantage of raging emotions. To me, the question is not why or how he had a gun but why wasn’t an armed person there to oppose him? Take away the ability to transport weapons and you hollow out the intent of national reciprocity and increase the number of helpless victims.

Okay, but it seems that wouldn’t be the only way they could smuggle. Not sure this would be the only way, so I don’t mind the gun in the cargo hold luggage.

As far as I know, baggage carousels are in non-secure areas, anyone could walk in from the street.

No one surveyed me, I prefer to conceal carry, that way I know where my firearm is at all times and ready for use when needed.

The baggage claim areas of airports are outside of the secured area.
In most locations, you can walk right in off the street with a weapon.

I do not support guns being in carry on.

When I addressed this I had intended to only address luggage sent to the cargo hold.

Checked luggage meant something different to me than it did to others. That was my mistake.

That’s ok. I would prefer to carry it on with me anyway.

Another kneejerk reaction brought about by the media. Pure BS. Before Lauderdale, the “majority” never gave this a thought. Dumbass “media”.

They’ll try their best to flip the tables on us as “racist”, “bigoted”, & “hateful” to get their agenda thru.

The American Culture had very very few problems with guns until the libs got into the schools and the immigration act of 1965 opened us up to the turd world.

I have been posting the same thought as you. The luggage claim area is accessible to any person from outside the airport.

In fact just last month that is where we met our 2 daughters arriving in Florida on flights, for Christmas holidays. I could have carried an arsenal of guns there if I was a bad actor, since that is not a secured area.

My whole point is, this whole issue about checking guns on flights is redundant. Just to be clear, I am 100% against passengers having guns in their carry on baggage. The checked bags are stored in the cargo area which is not accessible to anyone during the flight.

Would it have been better if he had flown with just cash and bought one off the street?
