Confirmation Hearings: Sen. Cory Booker Breaks Tradition, Will Testify Against Jeff Sessions

On Monday, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker announced that he will break longstanding Senate tradition on Wednesday by testifying against his colleague, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, during Session's confirmation hearing for U.S. attorney general.

"Concretely, I'm breaking a pretty long Senate tradition by actually being a sitting senator testifying against another sitting senator," Booker told MSNBC's Chris Hayes on Monday. "Please, understand. I think these are extraordinary times and they call for extraordinary measures."

Booker emphasized, "I'll be testifying against my current colleague."

Booker's move is believed to be the first time that a sitting senator has testified against a colleague during a cabinet nomination hearing.

"There's a whole spectrum of things that Jeff Session's own words represent a real threat to vulnerable populations in this country, and that is something that I feel necessary to do everything that I can to speak against," Booker declared.

"We've seen already in this country that we are at a strike point around issues of policing, around issues of civil rights, around issues of gay and lesbian equality within our country," Booker argued, referencing in turn the "Black Lives Matter" movement and the movement for LGBT "rights." Booker argued that Sessions stood against each of these movements. "He has a posture and a positioning that I think represent a real danger to our country.

The New Jersey senator also warned that, if Sessions were to become attorney general, the Trump administration might crack down on marijuana legalization in the states. "Please understand that every state that has medical marijuana or is looking to legalize is in violation of federal law," Booker said. "The Obama administration chose not to enforce that, and the next administration could change their position and literally drag people to federal court who are participating in those state legal activities."

As a former U.S. attorney, Sessions has taken strongly conservative stances on criminal justice issues and immigration.

Booker, who may have his eye on a 2020 presidential bid, emphasized the unprecedented nature of this move.

Need a Republican Senator on the committee to cross examine Booker and bring up his own checkered past as a matter of credibility. Bet no Senator will do it.

Senator Cory Booker Caught Up In Newark Watershed Scandal

Though other scandals may be more prominent in New Jersey at present, the investigation into the corrupt practices of the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation (NWCDC) is slowly but surely making progress with Senator Cory Booker coming under scrutiny. The NWCDC was charged with managing Newark’s water and was paid by the City of Newark $10 million a year to ensure the city had access to potable water.

According to a report by the New Jersey Comptroller, during the time of the unethical and possibly illegal practices by the NWCDC then-Mayor of Newark Cory Booker served as chairman of the board overseeing the now disbanded agency. The corrupt and questionable practices of the NWCDC were carried out by Booker loyalists who contributed to Booker’s campaigns with one serving as a high ranking campaign officer.

Furthermore, it now appears that part of the funds gained from NWCDC no-bid contracts by one of Booker’s allies may have gone to Booker himself as part of a confidential compensation agreement with his former law firm.

The central focus of the Comptroller’s report is on NWCDC Executive Director Linda Watkins-Brashear. Brashear is a longtime Booker ally and donated more than $5,000 to Booker and friends between 2008 and 2010. Also during that time Brashear was using the NWCDC to enrich herself with taxpayer money. According to the report, Brashear wrote undisclosed checks worth $200,000 to herself, arranged to give herself severance packages worth $700,000, and steered $1 million of NWCDC contracts to her friends and ex-husband.

Another Booker ally featured in the report was Elnardo Webster. Webster served as Booker’s Campaign Treasurer for his 2006 mayoral campaign and was a founder, along with Booker, of the law firm Trenk Dipasquale before Booker became mayor. Webster served as General Counsel of NWCDC and was paid more than $1 million in legal fees by the NWCDC between 2007 and 2011.

Senator Sessions has every right to stand against immoral organizations, and in fact has a moral duty to do so. The homosexuals in this country already had the same rights as everyone else, they simply wanted superior rights when it came to whom they lived with. The BLM 'movement' is more of a bowel-movement than anything else and should be treated with the same process.

I think so too. The RAT party understands their only hope of winning is to find attractive, well spoken persons of color who are, thus exempt from all criticism, to be their national candidates in the future. Kamala Harris would probaby be even better since she apparently doesn't have any imaginary friends and could be a historic twofer: first female of color president.

I think Corey is trying to position himself to run for President.

I hope Gov. Christie runs against him in 2018 and cleans his clock.
