'Cheap Shot': Al Roker Slams Media For Suggesting Jenna Bush Is Racist After Golden Globes Mistake
Townhall.com ^ | January 10, 2017 | Cortney O'Brien

Jenna Bush Hager made an innocent mistake on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night. In an interview with musician Pharrell Williams about the music he helped produce for the film "Hidden Figures," the NBC anchor accidentally combined the movie title with that of "Fences." "You're nominated for 'Hidden Fences,'" she said to Williams, who looked a little surprised but still answered her questions.

Pharrell probably forgot about it by the time he sat down at his table. The media, however, with the help of some cyber bullies, won't let Bush Hager live it down. On Twitter, some suggested she didn't care about movies with predominately black casts, a spoof on Kanye West's infamous statement in 2005 that George W. Bush "doesn't care about black people."

After reading all of the character attacks, Bush Hager apologized for her mistake on TODAY Monday morning while fighting back tears.

"If I offended people, I am deeply sorry," she said. "It was a mistake. You all know I am not perfect."

"What I didn't want to do is make anyone feel lesser than who they are," she added.

That's when Al Roker spoke up on behalf of his friend.

"All of us who know you, know your heart and know that that was a mistake," he said. "This culture of Twitter and people waiting to pounce to get on people, it's got to stop. It's just ridiculous."

He wasn't done, next calling out the media for their part in giving voice to these baseless attacks.

"For The New York Times to pile on, to repeat these tweets, it's a cheap shot," he said.

There's a reason he's still everyone's favorite weatherman.

For what it's worth, Pharrell forgave Bush Hager as well.

Don't worry @JennaBushHager!Everyone makes mistakes. Hidden Fences does sound like an intriguing movie though. Just saying... ?????— Pharrell Williams (@Pharrell) January 9, 2017

Michael Keaton handled the exact same mistake much better:

The "Batman" star issued a highly sarcastic apology after mistakenly combining the titles of "Hidden Figures" and "Fences" during Sunday's award show, clearly not too concerned by the flood of backlash he received on social media.

"Let's make this official: I'm sorry, I apologize, I screwed it up," Keaton told a TMZ cameraman in a clearly sardonic tone.

When told the Internet was having a field day with his mistake, the 65-year-old star further feigned his immense regret.

"I'm a horrible person," he uttered. "I'm horrible person."

"I'm gonna sleep pretty well," he concluded to TMZ before zooming off in a limousine.

Kanye West’s infamous statement in 2005 that George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people.”

Gee that is sorta weird since now under a Black President for 8 years blacks are worse off then they were under Bush and race relation are worse then they have been in 40 years

This was stupid... OF HER TO APOLOGIZE AND CRY

For chrissakes, she got the name of the movie wrong... that's reason for tears and an apology? That is how we let the lefttards win, by taking their stupid ‘offense’ seriously.

I am sorry that Twitter and the liberal media blew up a mistake into a firestorm to the point where Jenna Bush was crying. I really am. Its disgusting. But . . . .

Anyone in the public eye needs to have a thick skin about anything on Twitter. Twitter is a cesspool of crass and abusive comments. She could have said the title right and people still would have slammed her on Twitter.

Second, why is Jenna Bush on TV at all? I guess its better than Chelsea’s $600K a year no work job at NBC but there is only one reason she got the job — her daddy and her family’s political status.

That is actual factual, but that arrogant pos occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave claims that under his administration race relations have improved, when in fact the opposite is true.

Jenna gets to cozy up with Megyn soon.

Exactly. The worst thing about this is that apologized, or ever felt that an apology was necessary. Then to almost cry over it? WTF?

It should be a lesson for this liberal Bush that even with the advocacy for gay marriage and obvious contempt for people who actually voted for her father and grandfather, it gains her nothing with her preferred fellow leftists.

Jenna’s apology was fine with me. I don’t think she’s racist. But she shouldn’t have said “If I offended ...” because there are people that say they were offended and she knows that.

Were there any corpsman from one of the 58 states to come to Feral’s defense?

If her slip of the tongue means Jenna is “racist”, then Obama’s slip about “his Muslim faith” proves he is a muzzie. She should have told the people who were slamming her to get an effing life.

I walked by Trump Tower a couple of months ago. A guy was at the entrance protesting Trump. I told him I was a Trump supporter. He asked me if I was a racist, homophobe or sexist. I said ‘all three’ and kept walking.

I guess Steve Harvey is a racist for announcing the wrong contestant as the winner of the Miss Universe pageant.

Though the attacks are wrong it’s hard to gin up much sympathy for Jenna as she is now being attacked by a movement that she and her family sided with:

“Laura Bush and her daughter Jenna Bush Hager have similarly expressed worries about Trump’s effect on the political discourse and pleaded the Fifth when asked whether they’d be voting for Trump.”

Thank you! Can’t sympathize with her after she was sidling up to this group before the election.

The only mistake is apologizing for something you didn’t do. I would have said “I said nothing racist. Those of you who say I did, are cordially invited to descend into hell.”
