U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson announced Friday morning that he will not seek re-election to represent his Plano-based seat in Congress.

Johnson, a Vietnam War veteran, made the announcement over email Friday.

"After much prayer, I have decided I will not seek re-election to serve the Third District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018," he wrote. "This will be my final term in the appropriately named 'People’s House.'"

A fighter pilot, Johnson flew combat missions in Korea and Vietnam, and he was an instructor at the Air Force Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call that institution “Top Gun.”

We are saying goodbye to a great American. He will be missed.

Possible candidates to replace him are state Senator Van Taylor, another veteran, Collin County Judge Keith Self, and state Representative Jody Laubenberg.

Amen. A true American hero, when the word has now been so overused and misapplied. A fighter pilot’s fighter pilot who fought in Korea & Vietnam, member of the Thunderbirds flight demonstration team, spent nearly seven years as a POW, including 42 months in solitary while being tortured, wounds that afflict him to this day, commanded the USAF Weapons School, most conservative member of the House, outlived his wife, now 86 y/o. I hope he has a long and meaningful retirement, enjoying his grandchildren & great grandchildren.

My congressman. In the 90s I heard congressman Johnson was pushing an extreme anti-gun law. I wrote Sam Johnson’s office with my displeasure. Turns out it was Eddie Bernice Johnson that was pushing it (no surprise) and Sam’s team was right on top of it and corrected me.

A good guy and I’m sorry to see him go. I hope we can get someone nearly as good to replace him.

He was one of the good guys who was not a Cheap Labor Express Republican. They are unfortunately rare.
He needs to be replaced by someone who is for the rule of law and the citizens.

...and he was an instructor at the Air Force Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call that institution “Top Gun.”

"Top Gun" was a Navy program. "Red Flag" was an Air Force program. Both have evolved and changed names. Don't believe they ever shared names.

We’re saying goodby to an a hero who volunteered for the tough assignments. Compare that to the military service of the Speaker or Majority Leader. The good guys leave, the Limp-Richards remain.

They didn’t share names and Top Gun was always officially the Navy Fighter Weapons School, and will always be known as Top Gun. An exceptionally expensive opportunity, but a real blast.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I can’t believe it has been that long. Miss the flying, miss the people even more.
