The National Board of Review dinner is like the big pre-game to the Golden Globes, where wine bottles are uncorked in New York and dont stop flowing until the Hollywood Foreign Press Associations gala on Sunday. But this years ceremony will forever be remembered for its nine-minute tour-de-force speech from Meryl Streep.
Streep, for once, wasnt invited to accept an award. Instead, she was there to honor Emma Thompson for her portrait as Mary Poppins creator P.L. Travers in Disneys Saving Mr. Banks.

Streep sucks.
This twisted sickness is what money does to your brain. I will just die proud and poor. Screw the filthy liberal Hollywood elites.
Boycott the creeps! Don’t go to their movies.
i haven’t, for 17 years now....
Isn’t she just the little social justice warrior?
I have yet to meet a perfect man or woman Ms. Streep.
I will say this. Walt Disney fed more dreams that you would feed should you live 10,000 lifetimes.
Are there things about the Disneyland Enterprise I find problematic today? Sure.
Like humans, there are no perfect enterprises either.
Folks could do a lot worse than turning to Disney for entertainment.
People from many walks of life rub shoulders side by side at a Disney theme park, a Disney hotel, a Disney cruise, or a Disney movie.
I guess that shapes up rather poorly with all you’ve done for humanity, but I’ll still take Disney over you any day (or night) of my lifetime.
Who the hell is this Sterile Meep I keep hearing about?
Walt Disney was a known anti-semite. I’ve heard that my whole life and as far as women...That was what a lot of men thought back then. Doesn’t make them sexist.
An much overrated has-been from Hollyweird
Saving Mr. Banks was a great movie...lots of nominations from other groups, but didn’t get a peep from the Oscars...
completely false..just because you “heard” it doesn’t make it so...if you’ve read any book on Disney the antisemitism accusation is one of the most absurd...
MERYL STREEP: He formed and supported an anti-Semitic industry lobbying group.
FACT: This is the most grotesquely misinformed statement presented by Streep during her vitriolic speech. Streep is referring to Walts involvement in the formation of the Motion Picture Alliance for Preservation of American Ideals (MPA). This was not a fringe organization nor was its purpose anti-Semitism. It was a mainstream, if miguided and reactionary, organization enacted by the movie industrys conservative elite, and its membership included a whos who of Hollywood, among them directors Cecil B. DeMille, John Ford, Norman Taurog, King Vidor, Victor Fleming, Leo McCarey and Sam Wood; actors John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Ginger Rogers, Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Montgomery, George Murphy (who later became a U.S. Senator) and Ronald Reagan (who later became president of the United States); MGM art director Cedric Gibbons; and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.
When the MPA was formed in 1944, of which Disney became its first vice-president, its agenda was spelled out clearly in the groups mission statement:
We believe in, and like, the American way of life: the liberty and freedom which generations before us have fought to create and preserve; the freedom to speak, to think, to live, to worship, to work, and to govern ourselves as individuals, as free men; the right to succeed or fail as free men, according to the measure of our ability and our strength.
Believing in these things, we find ourselves in sharp revolt against a rising tide of communism, fascism, and kindred beliefs, that seek by subversive means to undermine and change this way of life; groups that have forfeited their right to exist in this country of ours, because they seek to achieve their change by means other than the vested procedure of the ballot and to deny the right of the majority opinion of the people to rule.
In our special field of motion pictures, we resent the growing impression that this industry is made of, and dominated by, Communists, radicals, and crackpots. We believe that we represent the vast majority of the people who serve this great medium of expression. But unfortunately it has been an unorganized majority. This has been almost inevitable. The very love of freedom, of the rights of the individual, make this great majority reluctant to organize. But now we must, or we shall meanly lose the last, best hope on earth.
The groups formation has to be viewed in the context of the much bigger ideological and cultural turfwar that was taking place in Hollywood at the time. The era and its politics are extensively documented in the recent book When Hollywood Was Right: How Movie Stars, Studio Moguls, and Big Business Remade American Politics. As part of that eras politics, name-calling was fervent (sound familiar?). Conservatives referred to liberals as Pinkos, New Dealers, and Commies. Liberals, in turn, branded conservatives, like Walt, as Fascists and anti-Semites. Labelling the MPA an anti-Semitic organization was a rhetorical tactic used by the left to attack it, and while there were surely anti-Semites in the group, it was not an inherently anti-Semitic organization nor was that Walts reason for being involved in the group.
Walts involvement with the MPA peaked in 1947 when the groups members testified in Washington D.C. in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Disney was among those who spoke as a friendly witness and he called out the leader of the Disney studio strike, David Hilberman. Disney presumably felt vindicated after exposing who he believed were subversive elements within the Hollywood industry, because his involvement in the MPAminimal as it had beenwaned after his testimony. Disneys actions speak powerfully to the notion that his involvement in the group was to settle personal scores against those whom he felt had wronged him, and never an ideological stance against Jews.
I’d like to see this go one step further in an organized manner by setting a date for conservatives to cancel all movie channels nationwide. With only a handful of good movies each year you wouldn’t be missing much. Go to the library and rent the old classics for free.
“Walt Disney was a known anti-semite.”
You bought the Kommie-Kool Aid.
The Disney as bigot propaganda that you and Streep peddle came due the 1941 strike at the Disney Studios and Disney testifying at HUAC hearings a few years later.
These are literally communist slanders and propaganda.
Pathetic old woman has-been desperately seeking attention.
Walt, in his frozen cylinder, would be apalled at his stufio today. Where once you had heroes like Davy Crockett and Francis Marion. Films about love ,loss, and rebirth like Old Yeller, patriots like Johnny Tremain and the call of the future with Werner von Braun, all these fed and challenged our character, today you have Miley Cyrus. Nuff sad.
One thing this article reminds me is that at one point, the utterly forgettable film, Nebraska, was honored as a good movie.
Many of the old classics are on YouTube..
I’m not pleased with the kids that Disney grooms, who then go off to heavily influence kids negatively after leaving Disney. Some do before as well.
I think the whole kid entertainment industry is guilty of contributing to the delinquency of minors. There’s no question the values presented to kids are deplorable.
