“If the Islamists can take away our guns, then they will have smaller problems taking over the USA.”
+100 That is succinct explanation of why we have 2A.
Going Hunting?
Sure you can. I’ve done it many times. The difference is that I’m not a jihadi nut case.
Exactly. Signed affidavit enclosed certifying it is unloaded.

Your comment definitely contradicts your FRName...

For at least three decades it has been legal -- and, not too inconvenient -- to follow the rules of transporting firearms and their ammo in a hard-sided locked case -- on US airlines.
Many airports are so situated that the trip from them to a downtown site traverses some very dangerous and unsavory neighborhoods.
My checkable case is constructed so as to isolate the (loaded) magazines from the weapons, but make it possible to quickly bring the weapons into loaded and ready status once outside the terminal. I've been doing so for nearly four decades -- legally.
Thousands of legal travelers do so every day -- and, to my knowledge, this is the first time anyone has abused the practice inside a terminal.
(Of course, they could have [more easily] walked in from the street and created the same baggage-claim area mayhem.)

Apparently you have never traveled on business on a regular, frequent basis. Lucky you!!
But you have zero cause to advocate imposing your sheltered-life biases on those of us who must risk life and limb to do so.
My "WepCase" is a near-indestructible, ordinary-looking briefcase with a built-in combination lock. It has worked superbly for thousands of flights.
Why should I damage it by installing a hasp (or something) to cater to your dumb@$$3d, so-called "fix"?
I also put my "WepCase" on the counter, unlocked, and with the slides locked open on my semis -- and offer to open the case for their inspection.
Most agents appreciate your making it a routine transaction for them.
(The airlines long ago learned that external tags were invitations to theft -- and, for years, have routinely put the [filled-out and signed] declaration tags inside the case before you lock it...)
Not if your destination is CT. You need an ammo purchasing license.
Another reason not to go there.
If they did it like they do rental cars, it might be ok. But it would create a bigger mess, further away from the airport.
Of course you are correct. But my suggestion does put the perp into a non-gun-free environment, where his potential victims might have a chance to fight back.
My suggestion requires no changes or damage to your case. Picture something like a cable-based bicycle lock. Simple, inexpensive and reliable.

You are a NRA life member, so this should be perfectly clear to you:
1) AFAIK, this it the first and only misuse of a system that has worked well, untold thousands of times -- over decades. (I'm sure if there are opposing stats, you will correct me -- and, that's fine...)
2) You're proposing adding/inserting (hiring) another (needless) layer of taxpayer-funded bureaucracy and TSA hassle into the paths of 2nd Amendment-following travelers -- on both ends of every one of our trips.
2a) "Attention, all travelers: Bumfuzz Airlines regrets to announce that checkins for Constitution-following passengers are unavoidably delayed because the TSA agent serving all twelve of our check-in lines is currently [on extended break] [out sick] [retreated to her 'safe space' because a gun nut microagressed her] [has just decided to drag his/her/its feet]. We regret that some of you are going to miss your fights, and hope you will travel again soon with Bumfuzz"...
3) Do you think this would occur at zero co$t to travelers? If you do, we need to discuss basic welfare [minimum wage] economics.
4) Remember that little phrase in the 2nd Amendment, "shall not be infringed" that our NRA mentions occasionally?

Are you yet ready to admit that you shot from the hip when you were unsure of your target -- because there was none? '-)
Peace, FRiend...
[New tagline in your honor...] '-)
I think you can rest assured that any solution the gov't might propose will be both more complex and more expensive than my simple suggestion. I am also certain that the anti-gun types WILL use the incident to push for more unreasonable and far more onerous gun control. Best for gun owners to propose a workable solution to head all that off at the pass.
So, no, I don't see that I have anything at all to admit.
