Congress looks to start building a Mexican border wall within months
Washington Post ^ | Jan. 5, 2017 | Mike DeBonis

In a bid to swiftly deliver on one of President-elect Donald Trump’s chief campaign promises, congressional Republicans are exploring ways to begin funding a barrier on the U.S. southern border starting as soon as April.

Multiple lawmakers described the plans Thursday, which would use authority under a 2006 law supported by Republicans and Democrats alike to justify spending that could eventually reach into the billions of dollars.

How much is the loss of multiple factory jobs costing Mexico? If this work begins in earnest, you’ll see Mexico begging for a new start with us. I wouldn’t want to play Trump at chess.

Mexico and the United States are great trading partners however the present rules of the game benifit Mexico far more than the USA. Trumps wall and trade practices will correct this. Mexico needs the USA far more than we need Mexico.

Mexico will complain and bellow about the new trade deals, but will accept them as to not accept them insures economic collapse of Mexico. Mexico is dependent on the USA and we are not dependent on Mexico.

If one looks at the population of Mexico and their incredible wealth in natural resources relative to mining, agriculture, oil, vacation paradises they should as an indivdual nation be far more successful than any state in the United States. They are not due to endemic corruption of their government from the President all the way down to the street cops and their judicial system is equally corrupt.

Dissenters to this corruption often die.

Oddly enough the average Mexican citizen is a very hard working man or woman. They are the victims of this corruption and thus flee to the United States. I have great compassion for them but they are illegals and not my nations problem.

There is a place for them to work in the United States as "guest workers" only. These guest workers must be vetted and approved before they sit foot on American soil. As guest workers they must receive zero social benefits for themselves or family as that family must remain behind in their country of origin. Emergency health crisis excepted of course.

If they can work here for 17 years and be productive citizens I welcome them to my country and will gladly give them citizenship.

The reason I say 17 years is that is how long my brother in law from Mexico needed to become a citizen. He stood in line, the legal line and did everything he was supposed to do. He did not sneak across he border. He lived legally in the USA with his sister as a foreign national. He did everything correctly and 17 years later became a citizen.

On Google Earth find Fabens,Texas. Then go north about a mile passed I-10 to the BP gunrange on the left. All those brown rectangles are sections to complete the fence for Ft Hancock and Esperanza.
All it needs is placing.

You have a great grasp of Mexico, in my opinion. I agree with your point of view. I’ve always said that they have an abundance of natural beauty and resources as a nation. The have enormous potential, if not for their corrupt government.

I’ve also said that I’m very thankful that our southern neighbors are at least nominally Christian. We could have been bordered by Saudi Arabia..just imagine that!

"[President] Trump had campaigned that Mexico will pay for wall 100%. I guess that lawmakers weren’t following his campaign. Too busy supporting Hillary. Corrections welcome."

No correction here, but there are a myriad of ways to pay for a public project 'after the fact', as it were.

Most commonly, a bond issue secured with all kinds of border fees (toll crossings, entry fees, money-transfer fees). You get the idea.

Here was Trump's idea:

"[T]he United States will, among other things: impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards—of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]."-Trump's candidate website

"Trump said he would threaten to change a rule under the USA Patriot Act antiterrorism law to cut off a portion of the funds sent to Mexico through money transfers, commonly known as remittances. The threat would be withdrawn if Mexico made “a one-time payment of $5-10 billion” to pay for the border wall, he wrote."-WaPo

MONTHS! What about Weeks or better yet days! I would like to see the wall up or at least half done in the first 100 days! Even if we need to use prisoners to do it—Or illegals we round up! Or even call for volunteers to put the thing up!

Trump had campaigned that Mexico will pay for wall 100%. I guess that lawmakers weren’t following his campaign.

Mexico has flat out said they will not pay for it. So either we wait on the wall until they're forced to, or we begin building it and pay for it. I guess the question is which campaign promise is more important? The wall? Or who pays for it?

All the while getting welfare payments and tax refunds that far outstrip their paycheck. Don’t make excuses for these thieves.

There are no environmental problems if the wall is built on the south shore or the Rio Grande

Yeah and they’re ‘natural conservatives’ too. That’s why so many of them voted Democrat to keep those freebies coming.

And as for Trump, this is his ‘Read My Lips’ moment.

Well better start reading because it will not be a wall unless they build only one piece with a door in it for propaganda pictures.

It will be a double fence as proposed in 2006 before it was killed by Hutchinson and Chertoff.

For talking points I actually saw part of the 2006 fence. BP had cut it up and built beacons (with flashing blue lights) out of the material. A "stranded" illegal was supposed to walk toward the light, push a button that was located on the beacon and BP would show up to rescue them. This damn beacon probably cost in the neighborhood of 30-40k with all of the radios and solar. I asked one a BP Captain buds of mine where all the material came from. Scrap from the fence in Texas. There was no fence in Texas. He said, Exactly. WTF, they scrapped all of the new material that was bought for the fence. YEP...!!!!

How recent have you been to Fabens? That stuff has been sold off as scrap I do believe or shipped overseas for military use. I looked where you told me and did not see anything around the cattle yard and further to the gun range.

The last time I noticed it was February 2015 before I retired and moved. You might ask some of the BP around there, they’d know.

Mix-in medium-level nuclear waste in the ground soil under the fence. That should tag and make for easy detection of any diggers!

I am way less knowledgeable about our military resources than many here.
Is there some way , in the interim, that the national guard,
or the reserves, etc. could be deployed to stop the inflow while the construction is in process?
