Kentucky: Legislative Session Convenes with Intro of Constitutional Carry Legislation

Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- Yesterday, January 3 2017, the Kentucky State Legislature convened for its 2017 Legislative Session.

Following the beginning of the new session, constitutional carry legislation was introduced as Senate Bill 7.

This pro-gun legislation would allow any law-abiding individual who can legally possess a firearm to carry a handgun for self-defense in Kentucky without having to obtain a permit to do so.

It is questionable if this will pass.

But now that it is a possibility here it occurs to me that there may be an unintended consequence for those of us with carry permits in Kentucky.

I assume that passage of constitutional carry would mean the elimination of carry permits here. So, right now the majority of states recognize my KY permit. Without it, I can't carry in those states when I travel. That is a serious concern to me.

Do I need a permit from the State to exercise my First Amendment freedoms?

We shouldn’t have to have a license to carry, either. Permit or license, same thing imo. It’s all about Big Brother.

The way other states do this is to have a option to get a formal ccw permit from the state to handle reciprocity. Properly written legislation will eliminate this concern.

With Bevin as governor and the first Republican majority in both houses in almost a century - oh, and it is a SUPERMAJORITY - I get the feeling this will pass. :)

Unfortunately, in most states we do need a permit. I for one am not going to jail while this is the case.

I also intend to carry, when legal, when I travel out of state. The wife and I did a 5,000 mile, 30 day road trip last fall. We did not stop in any states that did not honor our KY permits.

My wife and I are the same way. We are headed to Utah to visit grandkids, the hassle of taking a weapon during air travel means I won’t have my weapon at my side for a week. I will feel strange for sure.

I suspect you can still get a permit which would allow you to get reciprocity. There has to be a provision for this somewhere in the legislation.

No state that had a permit system, ever eliminated the system once they got Constitutional carry.

They have all kept the permits for reciprocity, *and* eliminated the requirement for most instate carry.
