Obama boosted White House technology; Trump sees risks

As Barack Obama began preparing to leave office, the first smartphone-toting U.S. president ordered his team to upgrade the White House’s aging technology for his successor. New computers were purchased and faster internet was installed.

Not included in the modernization plans? A courier service.

But that delivery method of a bygone era may be in for a comeback under Donald Trump. Despite his voracious use of Twitter, the president-elect appears to be leaning toward old tech to ensure the security of sensitive messages.

“It’s very important, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way, because I’ll tell you what: no computer is safe,” Trump told reporters Saturday in response to questions about Russia’s alleged hacking of Democrats during the presidential election. Trump, who doesn’t email or surf the internet, said days earlier that computers “have complicated lives very greatly.” …

.
>> “I would like Trump to put in a system where emails and such that would be part of the public records be automatically be archived out of the control of the government officials who create them.” <<

That would of course require limiting the ability of their hand held devices to send “private” messaging.

What Obama did was create 18F, the new tech group for government.

What 18F did was promote unencrypted databases and “open source” code for government use.

The above 2 things have resulted in massive hacks against the U.S. government.

Agencies that were never hacked under Bush or even Bill Clinton are now routinely hacked.

‘He should get rid of everything.’

Before he says a single word in the White House, Trump should hire some serious talent to do complete sweeps of the White House for bugs and any other methods Omymy might have had installed to spy on Trump’s words/work! I agree that he should rip everything out that The Messsiah put in and replace it all.

“Obama boosted White House Technology...”

Boosted? So what did he steal? The WH PlayStation? The Apple TV box? One of his driver’s Garmin GPS map systems? The 108” 4K UHDTV?

Trump needs to tear out all these new electronics/servers and replace with his own or even nothing. I wouldn’t trust anything obama has installed. then scan for any kind of transmitter.

president ordered his team to upgrade the White House’s aging technology for his successor. New computers were purchased and faster Internet was installed. Obviously, in this move, they want to be sure there are no hardrives left lying around - - and, quite possible, have plenty of bugs planted around for eavesdropping on the new administration.

I can double guarantee you that they aren't having all that new hardware put in out of the goodness of their hearts.

"W" thwarted a lot of 'listening' by doing a lot of business at his ranch - Trump will do a lot in his places too - other than the WH....

I totally agree. Nothing about the current administration is honorable.

After delivery, you have to burn or swallow the paper.

Could be he’s having stuff upgraded so he can track and hack easy too. I’d replace every thing including computers and keyboards, and sweep the entire WH for wiretaps bugs before moving in. Then get rid of all dumbo employees.

The current system has been hacked so many times by foreign and domestic enemies it is worthless. Nor would I use current contractors. Step daughter owns her own IT business and says any thing is hack able today.

I assume Trump’s Team America will scan and scour that White Hut deeply.
Then fumigate it and air it out.
Then make it classier, including the return of Churchill’s bust.
Then Trump will move in. And use solid security techniques.
A man is in our White House again, finally.

Obama covers up and gets rid of a very long list of transgressions

There still should be backups of all files still archived somewhere.

There is most certainly a backup somewhere. That's what caught Ollie North.

To speed work flow, there should be an unclassified LAN with no possibility of moving from UNCLASS to classified. To wit, no DVD or USB on any user equipment. There is a case to be made for FOSS, the source is available inspection. The NSA once produced SElinux for classified material. This should be used or resuscitated for all computers. Microsoft should not have a product in any WH, DOD, or Intel organization system.

Metal detectors and very wide band scanners should be at any WH or government facility that processes classified material. No personal communications devices allowed in any of those facilities. These measures are Draconian but doable and would reduce mass leaks.

For sure if Zero had anything to do with it. I would think servers set up by Hillary would be preferable.
