Hollywood’s Gun-Control Dud
National Review ^ | December 23, 2016 | John R Lott Jr

Posted on 12/23/2016 6:11:25 AM PST by richardb72

Miss Sloane, a highly anticipated movie demonizing the NRA and calling for gun control, has bombed. The movie succeeded only in emphasizing the top-down nature of the gun-control campaign and how little intensity there is for more regulations.

The movie seemed to have everything going for it. Liberal movie critics loved it, and it was backed by a hefty ad budget along with heaps of favorable news coverage. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has already nominated the movie’s star, Jessica Chastain, for a prestigious Golden Globe, considered a strong predictor of the Oscars.

But two weeks after its national release, it has made only $3.2 million. During its second weekend, it averaged just $102 per movie theater per day. With a ticket price of $10.30 per adult, that comes to an average of only 9.9 people a day seeing the movie in any given theater. At least people had no problem finding a good seat.

And it wasn’t for lack of trying to get people to show up. Out of the 200 highest-grossing movies of 2016, only ten exceeded the $15.9 million television advertising budget of Miss Sloane, and seven of those did so by very small amounts. Miss Sloane spent more than the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, Star Trek, Pete’s Dragon, Arrival, Doctor Strange, and Hacksaw Ridge. It had twice the advertising budget of such hits as Sully, The Girl on the Train, and The Secret Life of Pets. . . .

Hey hollyweird. Even if hildabeast had won, this venture in to mainstreaming gun control via a movie would have failed.

I like John Lott’s writing, but he often comes across as clinical and analytic. This time the glee is obvious. It’s nice to see President Trump bringing joy to the world.

A movie by white liberals for white lieberals that most of the D party coalition could care less about (they are out buying Glocks).

The D party is a joke, but they should thank god they have the R party and its “intellectuals” as its opposition.

The left is delusional, like a fool who self-publishes fifty copies of his own book and gives them away to all of his friends. He then introduces himself as a “writer” or “author”.

It’s laughable.

No one wants to pay to see propaganda, period. We get enough shoved in our faces daily for free. Paid media is a respite, or should be. Look at who's bombing in paid media. What are they? Propaganda shills.

It is bombing just like “Truth,” the liberal fantasy movie about Dan RatherBiased last year.

If I owned stock in any of the movie companies that keep underwriting these far left-wing propaganda pieces I would be pissed. I am glad that I don’t.

So, two from nine is seven, scratch, scratch, drop the one. OK, the math reveals a $12.7M loss. Good job! I hope they keep making films like this.

That only counts the post production TV advertising budget. How many more millions of dollars were spent actually making this piece of excrement?

Actually, the loss to date is far greater.

The $15.9 million was only the TV advertising budget for the movie. The actual movie cost far, far more to make.

The loss is in the tens of millions of dollars at this rate.

That’s just the ADVERTISING Budget. Film itself was likely another 15-45 millon bucks that were set on fire by this crapfest . . .

The Chicoms are the big financial backers of Hollywood now so its not surprising that we’re going to see this type of crap and even with the low attendance figures, it’s not going to stop.
The Chicoms know that they have to get rid of the 2nd amendment before they can achieve censorship.

We need to look at this analytically.

1. Off the top, 52% of people will not see it because they are Republican.

2. Minus the cheating, that number goes up to close to 75%. Which leaves 25% of the population as their target audience.

3. College students don’t have the $30 to take their girlfriend/boyfriend/Bi-Curious/Other to a movie and if they do, they usually want to laugh.

4. Seniors want to be entertained. This movie isn’t entertaining.

5. You are now down to 10-15% of the population who “may” want to see an agenda driven movie.

I call this a piss poor business model for Hollywood. But then again, insurance probably covered the loss for the producers and everyone else got screwed. In other words, typical liberalism at play.

IMdb estimates the production budget at $13 million. Add $15.9 million for advertising and the loss is well over $25 million.

“No one wants to see a propaganda movie.”

True, yet “Miss Sloan”, which I have seen, is astoundingly bad, even for a piece of Hollywood propaganda. The movie The Contender, which came out about 15 years ago, was reviewed by Elle magazine as having been “...written to elicit screening room ovations by Rob Reiner.” Indeed, that movie was transparently leftist propaganda. However, The Contender also was well written, well acted, and well paced. I enjoyed watching it, even as I hooted at its obvious agenda. “Miss Sloan”, in contrast, is a snooze, lacking anything believable in the way of characters or dialogue. To tell you how incredible (in the literal sense of the word) the plot is, the Washington Post panned not only the movie, but the gun control legislation proposed in the movie, arguing — again, this is the WashPost — that the legislation was largely already in place and, anyway, would not have prevented any of the recent mass shootings. THAT should tell you just how bad Miss Sloan is, even for a piece of Hollywood propaganda...and that, folks, is saying something!
