The problem with making a stink about these hostages is that it will only encourage other idiots. A camping trip to Afghanistan while seven months pregnant is the height of lunacy. It’s like visiting North Korea; who in their right mind does it ?

Mrs WBill had a roommate in college that was going, by herself, to Iraq (Iran? can't remember...) to "Save the Children".

Not as a part of a program, or a charity. No invite. Didn't know anyone local, not a part of anything bigger like the Peace Corps. And, she was a college student, so she had no money to speak of. She just would land in country and start "saving kids", somehow.

My lovely, and far more sensible wife helped talk her out of it.

Back in the 70s Afghanistan was a big backpacker-hippie tourist destination, famous for hospitality and drugs. I knew lots of Canadians who went there—perhaps this young couple knew one or more of them and failed to acknowledge how much times have changed.
