Angela Merkel has called for a ban on the burka "wherever possible" in Germany and said there can be no repeat of last year's migrant crisis in a speech launching her bid for another two-year term as Chancellor.
"German law takes precedence over sharia," Mrs Merkel said during a speech at her party's annual two-day congress in the western city of Essen.
"The full face veil should be banned, wherever legally possible," she added, to prolonged applause.
That is expected to mean a ban on burkas in public life including for civil servants, schools, universities and while driving - described as a “burka ban lite” when her government proposed it a few months ago.
Party faithful from Mrs Merkel's centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are expected to overwhelmingly re-elect Mrs Merkel as party chief today, rallying behind her bid to stay in power.
Mrs Merkel, who has led Germany for 11 years, last month confirmed she would run for a fourth term but acknowledged that the election would be "more difficult" than any other she has contested.
She has come under fire for her "open doors" approach to refugee crisis. Germany saw about 890,000 asylum-seekers arrive last year, many after Mrs Merkel decided in September 2015 to let in migrants who were stuck in Hungary.
On Tuesday she said that situation "should not and must not be repeated".
"That was and is our, and my, declared political aim," she said.
Thomas de Maiziere, the interior minister and one of Mrs Merkel’s closest allies, first announced the CDU's burka ban policy in August.
“We all reject the full veil — not only the burka but also other types of full veil that only leave the eyes visible. They have no place in our society," Mr Maiziere said at the time.

Until very recently, Many towns/cities in the USA South (and maybe still in some places) had laws forbidding face masks to be worn in public. The KKK was the reason, but it works for muzzies too.
There was always a humerous local news story around Halloween, suggesting that the costumed, masked children were lawbreakers.

Merkel is schizophrenic. One day she’s fawning all over her little muzzie playthings and lashing out at whomever dares accuses them or raping German citizens and the next she’s calling for a burka ban. She’s certifiable. Loony to the max. Mental.
Too late, Angela. You helped destroy Germany.
What does “wherever legally possible” mean?
Pass a national law making it “legally possible” everywhere. No further need for disclaimers.
Pass a hijab ban while you’re at it.
And she couldn’t see the burka as a problem so many years ago when she waved the muslims in? How in the world did the Germans allow such a clueless person to have power?
It won’t be an issue in a few generations...sharia law will take over Germany and Europe at the rate things are going, and the burka will be the fashion statement for all women, like it or not.

Agree. Hopefully German voters are not deceived.Lying to voters is standard operating procedure for her. She has won many elections based on lies. Apparently, 2017 will be her next attempt.
But it is a different world now. Everybody is on Facebook, and will be reminded daily (by their evil rightwing friends like yours truly ;-) of her past lies. We’ll see…
If her citizens are stupid enough to think she will follow through, they deserve her.
Have to wonder if Germans will come to their senses and give Angie the boot.
Interesting, is it not, now left wingers always move right just before an election.

Germans need to ban Merkel.
So, essentially, it means they can still wear them, just not in small, particular instances. Sounds great, though, eh?
