~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Maryland

indianhead1

Surrounded by the Potomac River and Mattawoman Creek, Naval Support Facility Indian Head is strategically situated less than 30 miles south of the nation’s capital. In addition to its military value, the Indian Head Navy installation makes a significant economic contribution to the local community by serving as one of Charles County, Maryland’s largest employers.

Naval Support Facility Indian Head was founded in 1890 as the Navy’s first established presence in southern Maryland. What began many years ago as a gun test facility on the Potomac River has evolved and expanded to include numerous scientific and response-force missions serving all branches of the military – Navy, Air Force, Army and Marines.

Today’s military community on board Naval Support Facility Indian Head represents a diverse and strategically important mix of research and development activities, alongside operational support programs that are protecting the U.S. homeland from terrorist threats, as well as serving U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Army forces deployed worldwide on a daily basis.

At various times during its operation, the installation has served as a gun and armor proving ground, a powder factory, a propellant plant, and a research facility. Stump Neck Annex, which was acquired in 1901, provided a safety buffer for testing larger naval guns that were tested by firing projectiles into the Potomac River, and at Stump Neck.

Good morning all. Making a quick stop in to say hello and point out this road trip is very close to home. If you look way off into the horizon, you might get a glimpse of the homestead. LOL

Anyhoo, back to babysitting this week, so I’ll be scarce. Will be checking my pings, but if you need my attention, you may need to FReepmail me.

Have a glorious Tuesday.

Howdy, EGC! (((hugs)))

All is well here...we even had the windows one for a while. It’s cool but nice, too.

Hope you and Bo have a great time at the lake today. (And there are no lake cops to slow him down! LOL) What kind of pie are ya having later? What’s your fave?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Rub it in, why don’cha? LOL!

I gather you’re lucky enough to escape the cold blast shooting across the country, HJ. We won’t get snow - except maybe a few flurries - but we’ll sure get the cold hit. brrrrrr

There was frost on the windshield of the truck Monday morning; and we have extra blankies deployed!

Afternoon temps are still in the 60s.

Great weather for catching a cold, if you ask me.

Oh, yeah...and the niece in Sedona has been posting pictures of snow there for the last 3 weeks.

Arizona has something for everyone, from snow skiing in Flagstaff to outdoor swimming in Phoenix.

I live not far from indian head. I think they made gun powder there for many years, maybe as far back as ww1.
people around here say the place blew up once or twice.

Your weather sounds similar to what we’ve had lately. Frosty nights and highs in the 50s and 60s. Thursday and Friday we’ll only reach the low to mid 30s with lows in the teens, then warm back up slightly over the weekend.

December in TN. LOL

Ooooo, brrrr - - snow. Glad it’s there and not here!
We still need a lot more “wet” in this area but would prefer it to be in liquid form rather than frozen. We don’t get snow often enough for people to be able to drive on it and wrecks abound.

I just stay home. LOL
