[history]
The Indiana Board of Animal Health has issued an advisory after livestock on a southern Indiana beef cattle farm was infected with anthrax.
A veterinarian collected tissue samples for laboratory testing after the animal died unexpectedly. Only a single, mixed-breed bull died; other animals in the herd have not shown signs of infection.

Heads up to Indiana Illinois Ohio and Kentucky farmers.
To: LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget
Sux to be that farmer.
Cattle are expensive. If his whole herd is put down it would be the equivalent of having your house razed. Or worse.

I would imagine there is insurance for this instance?

As a child, my oldest son started calling his younger sister “Thrax”. My wife didn’t get it. Her name was Anne. He has my warped sense of humor in his genes.

Was it near the chemical/biological weapons depot? Indiana has one of those.

Could the animal have been deliberately inoculated with the virus?

We already have some animal cases of TB here in southeastern Indiana. It’s in the cattle and deer.

There probably is, but it’s a bit like living on a plateau and having flood insurance. There just are not that many cases of this sort of thing in the US. Would you consider car insurance if it wasn’t required and only a hundred cars a year get in accidents around the US? I wouldn’t.

The infected animal was reported to be a bull, so most likely the animal was purchased from somewhere in the Southwest where the disease is more common.

Exactly. This is no big deal for us.
In fact the people handling infected animals are getting the bonus of smallpox innoculations.

Factory farming really stresses cattle and causes them to be more susceptible to disease.

That's nice.
The infected animal happened to be a bull on pasture, however.
To: Mr. Lucky
And his infection came from other animals in his area. Only bulls are lucky enough to get pasture time most often.
My husband grew up on a cattle farm and his brother still runs one. I know a lot about them.
