“The script had called for another fight scene. Why did Ford think the other reaction more appropriate?
“Uh, it was appropriate because we’d already been three months shooting in Tunisia, and I had terrible dysentery,” he says, smiling slyly. “I wanted to get out of there. And it would have taken three days to shoot a fight with that guy.”
Too old to fight and too tired to run.
I must admit that I had seen that movie a long time ago and
it was a comic relief situation. Ford was visibly just
exhausted and did the only thing that was LOGICAL for him
to do in that instance. (I clicked in here thinking I was
going to be shown Easy Jiu-Jitsu. Indiana Jones probably
set the Jihadi movement back for several years after that
movie came out.)

I heard that the day of the filming of that scene Ford had some 24 hour virus thing. So he felt like crap & just ad libed the pistol shot. The director loved it & the rest is cinematic history.

Actually, Ford had the flu so just improvised. The other guy played along.

One of the best improvisational movie moments of all time. Time and again they were to have done the scene the way it was written, as whip vs sword, and all kudos to the actor with the sword.
I’ve wondered if the crowd/extras reaction wasn’t them celebrating knowing the scene was finally gonna be done with?

I remember the movie scene, it produced quite a laugh from the audience.
