Trump’s Taiwan phone call was long planned, say people who were involved

Donald Trump’s protocol-breaking telephone call with Taiwan’s leader was an intentionally provocative move that establishes the incoming president as a break with the past, according to interviews with people involved in the planning.

The historic communication — the first between leaders of the United States and Taiwan since 1979 — was the product of months of quiet preparations and deliberations among Trump’s advisers about a new strategy for engagement with Taiwan that began even before he became the Republican presidential nominee, according to people involved in or briefed on the talks.

The call also reflects the views of hard-line advisers urging Trump to take a tough opening line with China, said others familiar with the months of discussion about Taiwan and China.

She was not President and Hillary Clinton nor Bill as President would have touched any Taiwanese official with a ten foot pole, much less talked directly with one.

This is unprecedented, revolutionary within the ossified world of foreign affairs and awesome.

Bolten had the right answer this morning.

“China doesn’t tell us who we can talk to.”

All that I can say is about the future of the US/Russia relationship is the following: The globalists go apoplectic over a Russia/American alliance because it would destroy them.

Rosa Parks — her act of remaining seated in the Front of The Bus was spontaneous, right..? She wasn’t political, right..?

In fact her role was chosen after a series of meetings by a committee, and she had been a member of a local socialist party for very many years. Mind you I’m not saying she was WRONG for her action, I’m just saying it wasn’t at all what The Left has cracked it up to be for a half century.

Same for Betty Friedan, matriarch of feminism; she always takes very great pains to say she was a COMPLETELY ORDINARY HOUSEWIFE:

Who had servants. Was rich. And was the ex-girlfriend of one V.I. Lenin..!

They’re ALWAYS trying to say their planned, manipulated, orchestrated stuff is TOOOOOTALLY SPONTANEOUS, yup, sure.

— > So it makes sense that they say our genuinely spontaneous stuff was PLANNED. <—

Capitalist communism isn’t any kind of freedom.

Very true about Parks.

And, interestingly, this Taiwan issue is very analogous. Taiwan has to sit in the back of the bus because China.

Sometimes socialists have taken advantage of actual evils... the Rosa Parks situation was one such occasion.

It’s God’s way of rebuking a hard hearted people, by making other hard hearted people the only effective champions of the opposite.

That may be, but I believe it was planned that the Taiwan President would call HIM, and not the other way around, I read Trump’s tweet and he said the T.P. called him implying that people thought Trump and called him and he wanted to set the record straight.

..... This is pure Bravo Sierra! The Obama Administration brokered a $1.83 billion dollar weapons sale to Taiwan exactly 1 year ago. How could they have done that without any official communication .... Sheesh.

.... This is definitely FAKE news to stir up the Low Information Masses and spawn Hate against the incoming Administration..

This sort of thing does not happen by accident. It was intended. I haven’t heard any retraction or conciliatory comment from the Trump team.

I don’t think President-elect Trump is so much brilliant and a deep thinker as that he has a natural instinct, well honed over many years, to see areas where he can apply leverage in a negotiation and he doesn’t wait to develop a plan around it, he just goes. He is being slandered and hissed at in the same way new money industrialists were treated in the industrial revolution by the aristocracy.

The whole concept of international diplomatic protocol is a cottage industry built on a mutual lie of respect, that a foreign head of state from X must be approached by the head of state, but the head of state from Y must be met with a more junior ranking official, lest “protocol” be broken and international balances be forever unseated. It is all a form of witchcraft, and the political class depends upon it to know how to stay fed at the government teat. If Mike Flynn fielded the phone call, the chattering classes would have been satisfied, but not the President-elect.. that is like thanking the caterer at a fancy dinner party.

Remember “protocol” and “respect” when you think about election night, when instead of the losing candidate approaching the people who most believed in her, a lower ranking emmisary was dispatched. That was a breach in protocol, and by the candidate who supposedly knew the most about it.

Actually I was bringing that up to defend Trump against those who accuse him of "breaking protocol". On that note:

World: Asia-Pacific Storm over US trip to Taiwan, November 10, 1998

US Energy Secretary Bill Richardson is in Taiwan on a controversial two-day trip which has sparked protests from Beijing.

It is the first visit by a US cabinet official to Taiwan for more than two years.

Clinton, Gore to give speeches on visits to Taiwan, September 27, 2003

Clinton in Taiwan amid warning from China, February 8, 2005

Bill Clinton Daily Diary, Visit Taipei, Taiwan and China, March 1, 2005

I had a wonderful time in Taiwan. I’d been there many times when I was a governor. I didn’t visit Taiwan when I was president, because of the US government’s opinion that Taiwan is part of China. This issue makes visiting Taiwan a hazard, because even as an ex-president I have to watch my words.

Sixteen Taiwanese-American Organizations Write To Former President Bill Clinton, November 11, 2010

They conclude by lauding former president Clinton for his 2000 statements that Taiwan's future must be resolved peacefully and with the assent of the people of Taiwan. They urge him to reiterate these remarks, saying this would contribute greatly to the right of the Taiwanese people to determine their own future, free from coercion by China.

“say people who were involved”

yeah, right. WaPo is now reduced to making up fake news based on fake anonymous sources now that no one that actually knows anything in the Trump administration will talk to them.

OK so this is reported by Washington Post, dishonest is their middle name...that means they can’t come up with a legitimate article now and then? Even by accident? A broken clock is right twice a day...

However...I’m scaring myself a little here...

As I noted in another post a few minutes ago, Trump never does anything without a plan. It’s against his nature, he’s been involved in very large scale building and real estate for 40 years, picture yourself trying to build a 68 story building like Trump Tower without a plan...I’ll sit right over here and laugh...

Never underestimate Donald Trump.

I instinctively knew this was planned before I clicked into this thread and found a contested article about it being planned. Just posted that a few minutes ago in a different thread in fact. It was planned, I’ll bet money I don’[t have on it.

You don’t think the President of Taiwan places a call of this nature without knowing it will be answered do you? She knew Trump would answer before his number was dialed. An unanswered call would be an embarrassing political blunder. Both sides knew it before it happened, both sides knew Donald Trump would answer the phone.

Relax folks, Donald knows what he’s doing.
