That was an anomaly, caused by the feckless Bush. If he had stayed out of Iraq, focused the "shock and awe" on Afghanistan and immediately left them mired in their own rubble, the anti-war progressive wing would have never taken hold.
And, if Bush had dealt with the mortgage crisis when his administration recognized it, instead of rolling over when Barney Frank and Chris Dodd blew him off, the recession would have been short and minimal.
Then, there was the most unqualified Presidential candidate in recent history, whose sole attraction was the color of his skin. Too many people thought it would be "cool" to have a black President, and were surprised to find out that's not a good way to choose one.
Maybe the Republicans would have put up a better candidate than McCain in 2008. He probably would have pulled his punches against Hillary, but I think she still would have been a bad candidate. However, she wouldn't have had the opportunity to destroy her trustworthiness with the email server.
Forget Ryan, there is no point to squawking about him. His constituents rejected your candidate overwhelmingly.

More importantly, she won the popular vote in Cal and NY by a combined 5.5 million votes or so. Meaning she got cOmprehensively beaten in the popular vote in the other 48.

The Dems lost because they ran the only Dem candidate that President Trump could beat, namely, an old, corrupt, thieving, lying, self-serving, discredited harpy with no platform, who repeatedly voiced her hatred of half the nation’s voters, engaged in identity politics, and whose only claims to fame were the polarity of her genitalia and “it’s my turn”.
