U.S. veterans build barracks for pipeline protesters in cold

U.S. military veterans were building barracks on Friday at a protest camp in North Dakota to support thousands of activists who have squared off against authorities in frigid conditions to oppose a multibillion-dollar pipeline project near a Native American reservation.

Veterans volunteering to be human shields have been arriving at the Oceti Sakowin camp near the small town of Cannon Ball, where they will work with protesters who have spent months demonstrating against plans to route the Dakota Access Pipeline beneath a lake near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, organizers said.

The Native Americans and protesters say the $3.8 billion pipeline threatens water resources and sacred sites.

Some of the more than 2,100 veterans who signed up on the Veterans Stand for Standing Rock group's Facebook page are at the camp, with hundreds more expected during the weekend. Tribal leaders asked the veterans, who aim to form a wall in front of police to protect the protesters, to avoid confrontation with authorities and not get arrested.

Understood. The protests have nothing to do with sovereignty or “sacred” lands. It has everything to do with money. Just whose money are we talking about?

Yes. The poster is meant to be sarcastic.

I wanted to but don't know how to trim off the grandma line.

Below is a graphic of my home area, showing what it would look like if the Bakken oil wells and pipelines were ABOVE ground.

And, believe me, we are hoping for MORE!

Some veterans are leftist. Not many, but some. All it takes is two and they will say veterans are building a shelter. Don’t assume there are many or that veterans in general are against this pipeline.

It’s not an Indian thing either. The Indians would love for the pipeline to go through their land so they could charge a fee. But its going around their land, so no fee. Republicans who own the refiners or pipelines or wells like the pipeline. Also unions like it. But democrats who own the trains and some oil companies who want the price of oil to go up, don’t like it. This pipeline skirts both the Indians and Warren Buffett’s state of Nebraska. Warren is the real bad guy here. He has been stopping this pipeline from the beginning so his trains can transport the oil.

This is not about the environment. The oil will be drilled and burned either way. Its not about spiritual land. The Indians actually want the oil on their land to charge fees. Its about the billionaires. One billionaire wants the easy cheap pipeline. The other wants the train monopoly. That’s all it is. And there are land owners everywhere who win or lose depending on the route this pipeline takes.

I am mildly for the pipeline because its the right thing to do. But this is not a voting issue. Its someone else’s fight.

Thank you. I wondered about that.

The only credit I could find was from Billings, but I think that is because it was a Billings Gazette photo.

[One hippie that went out there was Jill “look at me” Stein.]

JUST SENT THE LINK TO DRUDGE.

Does that make STEIN a FELON? If so, does that nullify her recount requests? If so, barrage the link to DRUDGE so he sees it.

There’s probably a very simple answer that I’m not aware of, but why is it that the pipeline had to be built all the way to Illinois, since there’s a refinery over in Billings, just across the Montana state line?

True. The pipeline is ethical and the protest is unethical. “Veterans” are just people in vests with badges for photographers. “Indians” are just minorities in beads for photographs. The real Indians don’t approve of the “protest” and have not met with the engineers after many invitations. The engineers are brilliant, ethical and brave. The fake veterans and fake Indians are paid by losers to carry signs and freeze.

THIS IS THE WOMAN WHO IS DEMANDING RECOUNTS IN THE PRESIDENTIAL RACES. REASON ENOUGH STOP THE RECOUNT.

Stein was charged Wednesday in Morton County with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

A spokeswoman for Stein said Tuesday that activists invited her to leave a message at the protest site, and Stein sprayed “I approve this message” in red paint on the blade of a bulldozer.

Stein herself tweeted a photo of the spray-painting incident Wednesday afternoon: The tweet read “The Dakota Access Pipeline is vandalism on steroids. (GUILTY AS CHARGED)
