Heidi Heitkamp's Donald Trump meeting sets off alarm bells for Democrats

President-elect Donald Trump is set to meet Friday with North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a red-state Democrat, which could put Senate Democrats at a further disadvantage if she were to join the Trump administration.

Heitkamp told CNN Thursday she has no inkling of what the meeting may be about, but said she was open to discussing serving in a Trump administration.

News of the meeting set off a panic among top Democrats, some of whom began to privately make the case that Heitkamp should stay in the Senate rather than give up a seat that would likely be a GOP pickup. The incoming chairman of the Senate Democrats' campaign committee told CNN he had spoken with Heitkamp about the issue Thursday.

A transition source said Heitkamp could be a possibility for energy secretary.

"I think it's absolutely critical to have a conversation," Heitkamp said when asked if she would be open to being in the Trump administration. "It's good for my state. It's good for the work that I do here, to understand and share some priorities for the country and for the state of North Dakota and I look forward to having that discussion."

In a statement about the meeting, Heitkamp said she would work with both sides of the aisle -- whatever her role.

"Whatever job I do, I hope to work with the President-elect and all of my colleagues in Congress on both sides of the aisle to best support my state," she said.

While any position is far from a done deal, having Heitkamp in the Cabinet would be a double win for Republicans, and a blow to Democrats.

She has also been an absolute slobbering mess as regards the Dakota Pipeline fiasco.

The tribes in North Dakota vote for Dems in droves, and she’s scared to death to alienate them...meanwhile she shrieks and whines about Obama’s responsibility, about not getting any help from Republicans, etc,

Her victory in 2012 was a statewide race, of course, but she’ll be creamed in 2018.

There is no good reason for Trump even looking in the direction of this Hillary Lite overfilled pantsuit. Who the hell is feeding him these names?

The governor of North Dakota is a Republican so she would be replaced immediately by a Republican - who would likely be a shoo-in for election as long as he or she is a halfway decent person in a state like North Dakota. That would free up a lot of resources to fight elsewhere as no doubt Heitkamp would be a top target for defeat by the Republicans in 2018.

Heitkamp knows she is in trouble for re-election in 2018. If she joins the administration she might have an influential position for four or more years if she keeps her nose clean and Carey’s out Trump’s wishes.

She really has nothing to lose.

Purely tactical to get another Republican member in the Senate 2 years early. If Trump could clear out the body of deadwood (and there are scores) by giving them appointments to minor posts, he should do it.

No special election? Ugh. OK, thanks.

The article says that ND is a state that does NOT allow the governor to appoint Senators. Instead, there must be a special election.

A Republican will almost surely win it.

“I was unaware Palin complained about Carrier when I posted. You are correct. She is toast.”

Yeah, it’s amazing how so many people we thought we really knew before Donald Trump showed up, end up being clinkers. Palin was a “darling of the GOP” when she burst on the scene with Mc Cain. There was even a time that I thought George W. Bush was a good president. And I am ashamed to tell you that I financially supported that worthless a$$hole John Mc Cain, and that as a person who was raised (but does not now believe or support) a Mormon, I thought Romney was at least a decent human being. Oh how wrong can one person be.

Heidi! also lucked out with massive fraud on the Indian reservations, which put her over the top, Berg is entitled to be called a Senator-elect until the term expires.

An aside, I was looking at the SOUTH Dakota counties and saw one called “Oglala Lakota” and I went WTF, Shannon county changed it’s name. Lame. Seems like local tribal leaders decided they wanted to diss the man it was named for, Peter Shannon. THe law seems to say that the state leg and Governor had to go along with it after county voters apporoved it, “the legislature “shall” pass a resolttion approving it”. A few in the leg voted no anyway, I’d have joined them, stop voting 86% rat and maybe I “shall” care about your opinions.

Reservations should have been abolised and Indians assimilated long ago. I have cousins that are part Ho Chunk, they and their mom get free money from the casinos, a lot of money, patently uncool unless you let me run a card parlor or something whereever I want.

Meh, no skin off my teepee if they want so badly to rename it. It’s strange it didn’t bear the name of the tribe there, actually. It’s not a formally organized county, anyhow, and has no county seat (business is done in the adjacent county of Fall River). Both Dakotas created more counties than should’ve been and they had to dissolve some of them when some were in areas that hardly had people.

It’s noted that Shannon/Oglala Lakota is the poorest county in the nation. A premier example of what happens when the government “takes care” of you.

Yes, some states have too many counties. Some Nebraska (or was it Kansas, maybe both) counites IIRC are so small and Republican that they have no local rat party. ;D

As for the name, I’m tired of them playing the victim card, Peter Shannon hoodwinked us waa waa waa. Ogala? If it was just Lakota county ok, but Ogala? Odingo? Obama?

Shannon county.

Sears Tower.

Bombay, India.

William Jefferson Blythe

Cassius Clay (Mohammed Ali)

Lew Alcindor

Now and forever!

Oklahoma has a large Indian population...but no Indian reservations.

The economic (and cultural) lot of the non-reservation Indian is far, far ahead of the reservation Indian.

You’re forgetting the Osage Nation contiguous with Osage County. There’s still counties left that are remnants of the original nations: Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Kiowa, Muskogee, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Pottawatomie, Seminole.

I truly expected great things from Trump. But I must admit, I may have underestimated just how good he is.

But they're now counties, no longer reservations, no longer any federal involvement whatsoever.

Did Judge Shannon even set foot on the Lakota Sioux Reservation ? Lakota refers to a whole group of tribes beyond those in the former Shannon County, so Lakota Oglala referring to the specific tribe/sub-tribe would make sense. I doubt most of them know who Shannon even was, let alone what impact he had there: good, bad or none. If they want to rename it to reflect the reality of the place, let ‘em. If it helps them in any way, fine.

Sears Tower. (Willis, yes, stupid given that the name is a landmark, unlike Shannon County)

Bombay, India. (Which was a European corruption of the original name, which was closer to Mumbai, anyhow)

William Jefferson Blythe (Mama remarried)

Cassius Clay (Mohammed Ali) (the irony that he changed his name from that of Kentucky’s most prominent emancipator to that of a Mohammadan slaveholder is not lost)

Lew Alcindor (Strangely, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has a better ring to it)

And you left out Mount McKinley, even though almost nobody in Alaska except the tourists called it anything other than Denali. It might make sense had our beloved President discovered it or lived there or even died there, but it was a bit of a stunt by a fella who named it that when McKinley was only running for President, not after his assassination. If the fella were a Dem, that might’ve ended up Mount Bryan.

I’ll throw in Idlewild, which ought to be restored to JFK Airport. Renaming Cape Canaveral in Florida to Cape Kennedy (mentioned by Auric Goldfinger) proved unpopular enough they changed it back. LBJ had ordered it changed via Executive Order in Nov ‘63 and the FL legislature changed it back in 1973.

Osage is considered one, the only tribe in the state to retain a federally recognized reservation.

Read her article—she cheered for the Carrier workers and said she/we don’t know the details of the deal involved.

Then she talked generally about the problem with crony capitalism.

” I doubt most of them know who Shannon even was, let alone what impact he had there: good, bad or none.”

The people that pushed for the change did and it seems to be the main reason they did.

Willis, the local media calling it that drives me crazy. Who cares what the owners call it, we don’t have to follow and neither does the stinking media. It’s a friggin’ landmark, you don’t change the names of landmarks.

The White Sox just got a new sponsor for the their stadium naming rights, a local mortgage company called, Guaranteed Rate. Their logo is an arrow pointing down. SMH.

I REALLY hate Mumbai. Bombay sounds real nice. I approve of the Peking change to Beijing though.

Bill changing his name as a young man to that of his abusive stepfather after being Blythe his whole life was stupid. Real cuck move. I wonder if he would be such a piece of garbage if Roger didn’t beat him.

I forgot about Mount McKinley. I know better than locals what things should be called ok?! ;D

Hell yes take JFK’s name of that airport. Name an STD research center after him instead.
