For General Mattis, the position of Secretary of Defense wouldnt be just another inside-the-Beltway badge to add to his resume. The greatest danger would be that he would prove too honest for D.C.
Yet another quality Mattis would bring to the officea vital oneis that hes a superb listener (yet another rare quality in Washington). Hes not quick to speak, but when he finally does have his say, his words show command of the subject under discussion. And he uses words with the same economy as a rifleman uses bullets: no wasted rounds.
As a member of the Hoover Institutions Military History Working Group, hed listen to the rest of us blather on for hours before saying a word. Then he would succinctly, politely and irrefutably explain why we had no idea what we were talking about.
What would the nation get with General James Mattis as Secretary of Defense? Integrity. Deep knowledge. Courage, both moral and physical. Humility. Decency. Vision. A steely sense of duty. Fiscal responsibility. A natural leader of men.
In short, character.

Thank you for that!!!
The Armenian genocide was in 1915 not 2015. Typo.

He, like everyone else thought HRC had it in the bag so he was doing a little brown nosing hoping to get back in the game..
That’s why he never got past Lt. Colonel, character flaws.
A good article by Ralph Peters on General Mattis’ qualifications to be Secretary of Defense. I agree with his points and have heard from a couple of retired USMC officers that Mattis is a ‘thinking general’ rather than a “mad dog.”
Hillary went to sleep while our guys were fighting in Benghazi for 13 hours!!!!!
Brad Thor came around a couple months before the election.
Who cares what this a$$hole Peters thinks? He supported Hillary and treated Trump as though he was a joke. Peters lacks any credibility.
Who cares what this quisling piece of crap has to say? peters can GF Himself!
The fact that he endorsed Hillary calls his judgment into account. Nothing he says is worthy of being regarded as anything but from a Democrat hack and partisan.
The cat is dead, Jim.
My immediate reaction as well.
> For cryin’ out loud - how many concern trolls are going to use unthinking emotions as a venue for finding ways to second guess Trump????
If Trump likes him, that’s good by me. But it is worth knowing what the other side thinks. I was drinking liberal tears this morning listening to NPR. That had extended stories on the General. The spoke in the most glowing terms of him. The even had Hillary’s SecDef in Waiting speak highly of him.
The issue was raised that he hasn’t been out of the military for 7 years yet, and so will need a Congressional waiver for the appointment. No one seemed to think this would be an issue (except Gillabrand(D-NY)). I would just say the reporting was completely out of character with how NPR treats every other Trump story with whining, lies, and shrieking.
I had to laugh how, on another story, they spent 10 minutes talking about San Bernardino anniversary, without ONCE saying the word Muslim. It was all kumbayah.
Before the election, wasn’t Peters furiously peeing acid, grinding his teeth, and insisting that Hillary would be a better CoC than Mr Trump?
Can’t take this guy seriously anymore. A total Company Guy hack.
Not too knee-jerk of you. There's no "guilt by lame association" there, huh?
The very existence of NeverTrumpism is evidence to me that he’s real. Where was the NeverDole, NeverMcCain, NeverRomney movement? No need—because they were no threat to the uniparty.
Is this guy still against soldiers carrying on military bases? Giant douche.
If it were up to me, I'd ban any reference to that @sshole Ralph Peters entirely from this website.
