Washington Post Disgracefully Promotes a McCarthyite Blacklist From a New(trunc)
The Intercept ^ | November 26th, 2016 | Glenn Greenwald

The Washington Post on Thursday night promoted the claims of a new, shadowy organization that smears dozens of U.S. news sites that are critical of U.S. foreign policy as being “routine peddlers of Russian propaganda.” The article by reporter Craig Timberg – headlined “Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news’ during election, experts say” – cites a report by a new, anonymous website calling itself “PropOrNot,” which claims that millions of Americans have been deceived this year in a massive Russian “misinformation campaign.”

The group’s list of Russian disinformation outlets includes WikiLeaks and the Drudge Report, as well as Clinton-critical left-wing websites such as Truthout, Black Agenda Report, Truthdig and Naked Capitalism, as well as libertarian venues such as Antiwar.com and the Ron Paul Institute.

This Post report was one of the most widely circulated political news articles on social media over the last 48 hours, with dozens, perhaps hundreds, of U.S. journalists and pundits with large platforms hailing it as an earth-shattering exposé. It was the most-read piece on the entire Post website after it was published on Friday.

Yet the article is rife with obviously reckless and unproven allegations, and fundamentally shaped by shoddy, slothful journalistic tactics. It was not surprising to learn that, as BuzzFeed’s Sheera Frenkel noted, “a lot of reporters passed on this story.” Its huge flaws are self-evident. But the Post gleefully ran with it and then promoted it aggressively, led by its Executive Editor Marty Baron:

Full-on, flaming bulls**t.

Whatever the Russian “interference” or “influence” on our elections...if it was true, it would be the LAST thing our CIA would promulgate.

No one can explain to me why Russia, with its history of socialism, would propagandize in favor of an avowed capitalist, while undermining an admitted socialist. Why would Putin support Trump, who is an America-Firster, instead of Hillary Clinton, who would sell the Pentagon for fleamarket stalls if she could make a buck?

It makes no more sense than anything else the Left prattles on about.

Russia can not do anymore damage to America than Obama and the Democrats have already done.

Matt Drudge made a name for himself with the Monica story, and what really drove him was the fact that our networks knew about her but decided we didn’t need to know. He is dedicated to running a very real news site featuring similar stories our enemedia has decided we “don’t need to know”...

We have approx 2 billion people with smartphones that can quickly create and disseminate videos online. The quantity of the types of information retention and dissemination is growing even faster. Thus the media (and all of the people globally) must learn that the days of getting away with being manipulative are over. If you aren’t fully committed to trying very hard to be objective and unbiased then you will destroy your credibility. Furthermore, its important to eliminate plagiarism, especially for “talking points”

I'm not saying that this Russian interference theory is true, but the reasoning behind it would be that a Trump win would mean a chaotic or more isolationist US foreign policy and conflicts between America and its long-time allies, which would benefit Russia.

I'm skeptical about the idea that Russia and Putin were behind things that went on in the campaign, but when you consider how passionately the foreign policy Establishment was against Donald Trump during the campaign, the theory isn't as irrational as you make it out to be.

If Russia really did try to influence the election in order to avert the existential threat of the Clintons getting back into the White House, who can blame them?

That being said, I do not for one second believe Russia had one iota of influence on the outcome.

What upsets me is that we are a couple steps away from a shooting war in Syria, and the democrats keep accusing the Russians of messing with the election. They either need to put up or shut up. Manufacturing their own "reasearch" groups to parrot the accusations is counterproductive to international relations, all for their political agenda.

I am no fan of the Russians. Putin has no interest in fighting ISIS unless ISIS is attacking Assad. The Ukraine and Georgia are good examples of Putin classic Soviet view of the world. In that regard Mitt Romney was correct during the 2012 campaign. If we want to influence the Russians we need to do it economically, by affecting the interests of the oligarchs that bankroll Putin.
