Trump to scrap Nasa climate research in crackdown on ‘politicized science’

Donald Trump is poised to eliminate all climate change research conducted by Nasa as part of a crackdown on “politicized science”, his senior adviser on issues relating to the space agency has said.

Nasa’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.

This would mean the elimination of Nasa’s world-renowned research into temperature, ice, clouds and other climate phenomena. Nasa’s network of satellites provide a wealth of information on climate change, with the Earth science division’s budget set to grow to $2bn next year. By comparison, space exploration has been scaled back somewhat, with a proposed budget of $2.8bn in 2017.

Bob Walker, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said there was no need for Nasa to do what he has previously described as “politically correct environmental monitoring”.

As I recall, when this stupidity was announced, they were supposed to research all the wonders throughout history and beyond that this cult has given the good people of Earth.
Then edumacate the world on such wonders.

The strength of Trump’s leadership with cause climate scientists who disagree with man made global warming to come forward and tell the truth of the science.

Grants for climate research will dry up. The lyintists will be disgraced and kicked out of Universities.

6. a breakthrough in very high speed travel technology and gravity based “instant” real time and quantum particle excitement properties communication.

Sounds like the Ansible setup from Orson Scott Card's Endor series.

The feds pay for research which "proves" climate change which is used to drive more federal funding.

This isn't the fault of science or scientists. In every professional scientific community there is a vigorous debate about data, whether there is any and what it means - is there are real trend? Is it man-induced or geological in nature? Etc.

This is the fault of politicians with a mission - Al Gore, as but one prominent example - using federal funds to reward sycophants. This is not science. But yell at your politicians for this, not scientists.

If so many people “know” that climate change is a fact what else needs to be studied? We know rain is wet, no more research needed.

Climate/weather is NOAA’s job not NASA’s

There is no man-rated crew capsule yet and will not be for a while, neither do we have a man-rated rocket system ready. Return to the moon is five or more years away no matter what anyone does.

Astroid mining is a financially losing proposition until we have permanent colonies on both the moon and Mars.

No one has yet solved the problem of humans in space for years or even what is needed to protect humans in interplanetary space.

All of that is realistically decades away thanks to the Zero’s cut backs, dithering, and muscleman outreach.

However, the missing ingredient is political will of which beyond a few there is no real public support - certainly not from Democrats who need to feed the homeless and poor while importing even more of same.

"the second half of Trump’s first term: 1. we will return to the moon"

As a child of the 1950's I applaud your exploration schedule. However, it seems somewhat ambitious to say the least.

Returning to the moon in the next four years would require a Herculean effort. It is not impossible but I don't know if NASA is up to the task any more. It has engaged in too much "climate research" and muslim outreach and has lost its purpose.

I'll yell at both. Many of the procedures for scientific research and publication allowing others to duplicate experiments were in response to crooked science. Even Galileo, the paradigm for science standing up to the establishment of the Catholic Church, wanted to name the moons of Jupiter he discovered after members of the Medici family in order to curry favor.

Scientists are people. They have their pride, ego, greed, axes to grind and petty arguments with colleagues. Publication of data and peer review should filter these out, but sometimes they turn into a mutual admiration society where they know that none dare stop the gravy train.

Then there is this:

NASA - Vision Impairment and Intracranial Pressure www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/experiments/1038.html Jul 14, 2016 - Many astronauts experience poorer vision after flight, some even for years after. ... This in turn will help researchers assess vision problems and ... with vision questionaires to document changes during space missions.

Agreed.

There is still a LOT of room for improvement in weather forecasting, for example. A couple nights ago, as of mid evening, our low (at the local NWS office) was forecast (on the NWS website) to be 9 degrees lower than what was eventually recorded. That is a HUGE “miss”, and in this case the difference between a quite “hard” freeze, and no freeze at all. Any country boy or girl knows the potential importance of such.

"But the NYT and half the pearl grabbing FReepers said he changed his mind on Global Warming, how can this be?"

The NY Slimes lies 24/7, and the pearl grabbing Freepers will be embarrassed 24/365 for 8 years because they believe any lies printed by the NY Slimes or aired by Faux/ABCNNBCBS because they are so embarrassed by a real man as our president.

Two GRAND-SLAM HOME RUNS in one at bat!!

1. Kill the Global Warming hoax
2. Space exploration.

Of course, when Trump takes office he may find we already have bases on the dark side of the Moon as well as Mars.
