AFT President Randi Weingarten on Nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education
American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO ^ | November 23, 2016 | AFT President Randi Weingarten

Posted on 11/23/2016 4:31:54 PM PST by mdittmar

WASHINGTON—In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement:

“The president-elect, in his selection of Betsy DeVos, has chosen the most ideological, anti-public education nominee put forward since President Carter created a Cabinet-level Department of Education.

“In nominating DeVos, Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America.

“DeVos has no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools. The sum total of her involvement has been spending her family’s wealth in an effort to dismantle public education in Michigan. Every American should be concerned that she would impose her reckless and extreme ideology on the nation.

“We have an obligation to all children in America. That’s why we’ve fought to ensure that struggling schools get fixed, that we fight for kids to have the powerful learning, the social and emotional and wraparound services, and the great teachers they need. That’s why we fight for parents to have the voice they need and communities throughout the country to have the local decision-making for their schools and the investment they need, so we do everything we can to help all children have a great public education. What this pick means is far from ensuring that every child has the option of a great public education—the many who have it now will lose it. That’s been the experience of 25 years of privatizing: It helps very few, and many students now go to schools that have faced years of austerity and disinvestment.

“Betsy DeVos is everything Donald Trump said is wrong in America—an ultra-wealthy heiress who uses her money to game the system and push a special-interest agenda that is opposed by the majority of voters. Installing her in the Department of Education is the opposite of Trump’s promise to drain the swamp.”

Yes - they’re well funded. In many school districts the teachers are required to join either the NEA or the AFT.

Ask her why she has since 2013 sat on the Board of Directors of Jeb Bush’s common core promoting Foundation for Excellence in Education and why the DeVos Family Foundation has funded the Foundation since 2009.

Ask her why she has since 2013 sat on the Board of Directors of Jeb Bush’s common core promoting Foundation for Excellence in Education and why the DeVos Family Foundation has funded the Foundation since 2009.

Or - you can ask yourself why she has come out strongly against it in recent days and whether Trump, who promised to do away with Common Core, would appoint someone who would be working against his agenda.

F--- the possible folks who may get jobs with Trump - he deserves our trust and support.

The folks going nuts against him now remind me of the Leftists harassing the Electors and trying for recounts - our side is supposed to be glad he won.

He fought the DNC/LSM/GOPe and won the nomination and now he is getting crap from his supposed supporters.....pathetic.

Statements in recent days clearly are more important than years of deeds.

Statements in recent days clearly are more important than years of deeds.

So - Trump has stated he will do away with Common Core and has shown himself to be intent on fulfilling his promises. Do you really think he's naive enough to sabotage his plan?

So may concern trolls and so many who are now missing the signs of his intent to do what he promised the way the pollsters missed the signs of his victory.

Winning really must suck for some....might as well donate to the recount fund or harass an Elector to change the vote because we've obviously made a terrible mistake.........

Like I said - we've obviously made a terrible mistake - why don't you donate to the recount fund or harass an Elector to change the vote?

If Trump (forget those he's thinking of hiring) doesn't deserve our trust, then nobody deserves our trust.

Some people really seem incapable of handling success and have to work really hard to mitigate it by smearing feces all over it - remind you of anyone????

Some people can handle facts without launching into personal attacks.

“translation: Mr Trump has made a great appointment”

Just because Ms Weingarten says she is opposed, doesn’t mean she really is opposed. Read your Brer rabbit...

“to fix the deplorable mess in public education”. Sounds a little like the Vietman era, “We had to destroy the village in order to save it.” Because the objective is to destroy public education and replace it with private education that the GOPe can better control.

I’ve seen it work the other way, where private-school teachers leave after a couple of years to join the overpaid public school teachers; here in NJ the costly public systems have basically ravaged the private schools since parents can’t pay two tuitions for each child (the school taxes are so high).

They are the de facto owners of the Democratic Party, which is simply their political arm. They have operatives in every district in the country, they exist by plundering the occupied territory of the taxpayers wallets, and they can use that plundered money to support Dem candidates that will allow the theft to grow unrestrained.

NJ was killed by the teachers’ unions.

My objective is to give parents the power to select their kids’ schools. This will improve education through natural free market choices. As far as control is concerned, it properly rests with the parents, through school choice, -and not with washingtonDC or any political party Right now the parents have set little choice in most places as the far left AFT/NEA/DNC dictate what the kids are taught. They are not learning much at all about American history and political theory (only socialist or communist dogma) and the instruction in science, mathematics, English, critical thinking and research skills, and business/ economics/ finance are all usually deplorably deficient. True kids “graduate” unable to do anything except sign up
For welfare -

***... since President Carter created a Cabinet-level Department of Education...***

It is easily demonstrable that since Carter created Dept of Ed America's international standing in education has steadily declined from near the top to near the bottom! Close the #$@$%# thing down!

Blind worship is foolish.

And it makes perfect sense to fret away at every possibility, and express dismay with a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Winning is good - go with it.

Sorry you think of it as a personal attack - just trying to keep those who would do their best to sabotage Trump's base because they have so many "concerns" they just have to come out.

The Left harasses Electors and whines about a recount because they lost and our side (said loosely) harasses trump and whines because we won - ironic, no????
