Good grief, one can be on a “board” and be in the minority on a particular topic. Church board, County Board, Board of Education, Board of Directors, whatever...

DeVos’ statement on her website seems fairly clear, if (likely) hurriedly posted.

She’s wealthy enough to form her own foundation without having to ‘sit’ on one that supposedly has contradictory views.

It’s not like she was elected. She chose to participate.

And the Bush family is nothing but common core.

“How about the Dept of Education be abolished.”

You can’t abolish it cold turkey. It disperses funds to school districts all over the US. Yes it should be abolished but it needs to be defanged first otherwise it becomes just another ACORN type organization.

By defunding the department you make it powerless. That is the first step

Trump has actually said he wants to abolish the Dept of Ed. He has said he wants schools to be administered locally by teachers and parents. He wants all types of learning available and is also a strong supporter of ‘shop class’/vocational skills training as opposed to thinking everyone should go to a traditional college and get useless degrees. He knows if we are going to build things in the USA we must also be able to maintain them. So we need engineers and mechanics, etc.
While Trump was campaigning everyone was freaking out “no he should do this, why did he do that, blah blah”. nothing has changed now everyone is freaking out “why did he pick so and so, he should do this blah blah”.
HAVE A LITTLE FAITH PEOPLE!

To upgrade state standards, leaders will be able to leverage the Common State Standards Initiative, an upcoming joint project of NGA, CCSSO, Achieve, the Alliance for Excellent Education, and the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy. - http://www.achieve.org/files/BenchmarkingforSuccess.pdf page 24

CCSSO - Council of Chief State School Officers
NGA - National Governors Association
Achieve, Inc.

Achieve’s Common Core Comparison Tool was used by nearly every state in the nation, with direct, hands-on support from Achieve, and Achieve has provided Common Core “boot camp” to a number of states in the Network to support implementation efforts - http://web.archive.org/web/20120101000000*/http://www.achieve.org/AboutAchieve

In 2009, 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia signed a memorandum of agreement with the National Governors Association (NGA) and Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), committing to a state-led process – the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI). Achieve partnered with NGA and CCSSO on the Initiative and a number of Achieve staff and consultants served on the writing and review teams. - http://web.archive.org/web/20120327013320/http://www.achieve.org/achieving-common-core

Common Core is hardly state led, Achieve Inc. wrote it and conducted “boot camps” to train state personnel how to implement it.

A school full of this kind of student will be a failing school, no matter what caliber of teacher is there.

Right. But the root of the problem is broken, dysfunctional black families. I can *guarantee* that throwing more and more money at them is a complete waste of resources. DeVos and Trump will fail, if this is their plan. School choice will make a small but negligible difference.

The solution is scrapping the welfare state. It will take one or two generations to scrap it. Those embedded in it currently are without hope. These get grandfathered into it. Anyone born after a certain date will not be eligible for welfare. Sink or swim. Keep your legs together.

good points.
I’ll add that when I was in elementary school (1960’s) was when I saw the introduction of “SRA” reading materials. A bunch of color coordinated tabbed system for reading that looked nice but were boring as crap. Quite possibly led to the deterioration of reading and attention since you didn’t learn to read an actual book and then discuss thoughtfully as a class.

So what’s the solution - to keep warehousing them into crap “scrools”? How does that help the country? These inner cities are festering sores - we have to start turning things around.

C post 166 that addresses the problem directly.

Spreading the infection to healthy tissue doesn’t cure the festering sore.

This is a great pick. Have met her a couple of times and was in a small meeting with her in the 90’s on education in Michigan. Also supported her run for governor. She is conservative, smart and capable.

She has supported Common Core in the past and Jeb Bush loves her. First the worthless NeverTrumper Nicky Haley who despises Trump (and she has no experience in foreign affairs), now this billionare republican donor who loves Jeb. Will the RINO trifecta be uber Trump-hater Mitt Romney as Sec of State. From the way this is going nothing surprises me anymore with Trump’s picks. Looks like all this talk of draining the swamp was just more talk. Very disappointing to his die-hard supporters.

Only one candidate would have taken on the Leviathan.

As for appointments, the exceptions to sycophants, as expected, are RINOs, not conservatives.

Doesn’t Betty De Vos support COMMON CORE?

Her boss doesn't. Next question...

Point taken, but what is your solution? Some of these kids ARE retrievable — just look at how many going into the military that works wonders for, and that’s at a point many would say is “too late” in their lives.

Are we just going to continue to consign perhaps 1/3 of our kids, maybe more, blacks, whites, latinos, and others, to a literal hell?

IMO, somehow the “rules” for inner city schools, and many more, for that matter, must change. Ability to punish misbehavior would be a good start. Maybe institute that in 1/2 the inner city schools. Make ‘em “tough love” schools and call them “Academies”. If the parents don’t like it, they can send their kid(s) to a more lax school and see how that works out for them.

Betsy DeVos is a Board Member of Foundation for Excellence in Education, founded by Florida Governor Jeb Bush in 2008. Their agenda is the adoption of Common Core.

Lack of school vouchers is TEN times worse than common core. Common core is just setting federal performance standards, lack of vouchers is complete denial of good education. Performance standards can be easily modified. Lack of good education is a life long disaster.
