We all think we know what hypocrisy is: claiming to have certain moral and ethical standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform. But given the across the board hysterical response to Donald Trump's presidential win, it seems Octavio Paz's sentiment that hypocrisy can be a character trait applies. "When hypocrisy is a character trait, it also affects one's thinking, because it consists in the negation of all the aspects of reality that one finds disagreeable, irrational or repugnant."
Hypocrisy is indeed a character trait of the American Left. For months, the Left has been predicting that if Trump lost the election, which of course they assumed he would, his supporters would lash out violently. They would rant, rave and riot. Sure. Just as conservatives did when McCain lost and Romney lost? But here we are, a week and a half after the defeat of Hillary Clinton and leftists are still rioting, marching, and weeping. Students on college campuses are behaving like ill-raised toddlers when they do not get what they want at the toy store. Adults who should know better are comparing Trump's victory to 9/11! That is how insane the left is today. This reality, that Trump will be the new president, is apparently a bridge too far. The left simply rejects it out of hand and are behaving badly. They apparently did not realize that elections have consequences, as President Obama instructed us 8 years ago.

The core of liberalism (or progressivism or leftism or whatever euphemism they’re using these days to make it more palatable) is Marxism. And Marxism flat says that any means to its ends are justified. That means there are no moral limits on what its disciples can say or do. If they need to say X one day and Not X the next, it’s perfectly okay in their world.
Nowhere was this made clearer than when Bill Clinton stood accused of sexually assaulting several women, and so-called feminists, who a few years before had howled in outrage at Clarence Thomas for allegedly making a bawdy remark to Anita Hill, defended Clinton or remained silent, on the grounds that “he may be a pervert, but at least he’s OUR pervert.”
It was the ultimate demonstration of the hollowness, the utter moral bankruptcy, of the Left.
The left is a sect.
“Hypocrisy” is redefined as a trait of the other side.

It's not the point of this article, but the definition irritates me because it misses a key point. It is not hypocritical to fall short of perfection - it's human. True hypocrisy lies in claiming to have moral and ethical standards, which others should follow, but that one has no desire to conform to.
If the First Lady tells America's children that they may only eat healthy school lunches because it's good for them, but she eats fried chicken and french fries once a year and follows the same rules otherwise, that's not hypocritical, just human. If in private she ignores the rules she sets for others, and she tells the White House chef she wants southern cooking with lots of butter regularly, that is hypocritical.
If my pastor condemns lusting after women in our hearts and then watches porn daily, that is hypocritical. If he is loyal to his wife and never visits inappropriate web sites, but a couple times a year gets distracted by a beautiful woman and admires her body while thinking inappropriate thoughts, that's merely human.
Hypocrisy is about putting on a false show, not about failing in our best efforts.
Here’s where I think it actually comes from:
Leftists are all about feelings and deficient in the ability to think logically and rationally. So when they want something, that’s all they see. Example: 0vomit uses EOs to get what they want, so EOs are good. Trump uses EOs to undo what 0vomit has done, so EOs are bad. Same hypocrisy for things like the Electoral College, filibusters, reconciliation, etc.
I know a bunch of these people. It’s not so much that “the ends justify the means”, it’s that they are spoiled, self-centered narcissists who can’t process anything beyond what they are feeling right now.
No, they’re just engage in warfare with the Right and using whatever method that work to win which includes lying
I think their hypocrisy is derived from a win-at-all-costs attitude fed by the fear/teaching that ALL conservatives are morally evil, not just people to disagree with but people who must be shut down and controlled.
When winning becomes the only thing, taking hypocritical stands seem inevitable. This is what convinces them that cheating at elections is permissible, that using the FBI and the IRS to target political opponents is justifiable and that speech codes are one thing when people on the Left say certain words but mean far worse when people on the Right say them.
In a larger picture, the Left’s rejection of the Judeo-Christian God gives them license to do whatever evil seems right to them - a trait that connects the Nazis of WWII, the Communists of the Cold War and the Muslim hordes of today.
Trait? Yes.
Character trait? No, since they lack all character.
