WASHINGTON—President-elect Donald Trump is considering several retired military generals as possible picks to be secretary of defense, people knowledgeable about the transition process said.

Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, a former war commander who has long voiced concerns about the security threat posed by Iran, is among those being considered. Gen. Mattis is expected to visit with Mr. Trump in New Jersey, transition officials said Friday.

Gen. Mattis didn’t respond to attempts to reach him for comment.

Freakin' A.

The Donald is going to nominate one of my West Point classmates to head the CIA. And now he may bring in a retired Marine four-star general to be SecDef. And General Flynn could be the National Security Advisor.

Here is my question for enemies of America: Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?

And all Trump’s picks can bring back the good ones zero fired.

Goodbye, perfumed princes.

DoD must be transformed... our military is in a bad place, and readiness is down.

This would be a bold pick - any SecDef must have prior experience running a large organization

Freakin'A,

Congratulations, to you, your classmate, the military and the nation.

What a wonderful thing it is to see the ship of state being righted, at last.

Gen. Mattis turned down the post cold. He does not want anything to do with dc anymore. He is very committed to his work with the Gold Star Families & the Fisher House Org’s

The Journal is evidently unaware of a law that specifies no general officer may serve as Secretary of Defense until he has been retired from the military for at least seven years.

The intention of the law is to insure civilian control of the military.

Gen. Mattis retired May 22, 2013 and is thus not eligible to serve in this post.

I saw someone say that a candidate with a military background has to be retired 7 years before they can be considered. He hasn’t been out that long. I think he would be the best they could put in there, love his mind set.

I have read that this 7-year restriction may be waived by Congress. Not sure of the mechanics of that.

But he will be available in 2020....

Even if he cannot officially be SecDef, he can certainly be placed in a position where he can advise and expedite the actions of the person so designated.

A position as liaison between Trump and the actual designate?

Screw him. All mouth. He talks the whole tough guy, “tears in my eyes.. or ill kill you all” etc.
Then he hammered the Haditha Marines and persecuted Sgt Wuterich.
He was too much of a coward to back up the men who fight the way he talked.

Then after he left, he winds up on the board of directors of Theranos the silicon valley fraud. That was simply influence peddling. Being a marine general gave him zero expertise in being in the medical lab test business. But he could give that Theranos girl access to DOD.

We can do better.
