Shares of gun manufacturers took a big hit Wednesday morning, after news that Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger & Co. each fell more than 12 percent after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, and the Republicans retained control of the House and the Senate.

I was blissfully unaware of vintage S & W revolvers until an old gun-nut buddy of mine came to visit, after three decades of not seeing each other, and brought his 629 along.

I bought it.

During that trip he also eased me into the sect-like secrets and rituals of the older Smiths, the Model 29s in particular, like the pins the and recessed cylinder chambers, all the different little quirks and idiosyncracies of various models, and so on.

I spent the next five years trying to pick up a fine collection of the 5-screw 29, the 4-screw ‘pre-29,’ and the regular (and singularly magnificent) Model 29-no dash revolver.

The process involved in this quest is a little like going to college, or maybe to long-term rehab. You just have to keep writing checks until you get what you want, or run out of money and simply have to drop out.

When I got into it a fine set of goncalo-alves Coke-bottle grips might run you $400. The grips are a summer semester of classes themselves, with the requisite tuition fees, you might say.

These days they can run twice that and more, depending on wood, condition and age. I am done though. No more! No more 29s! No more stocks for 29s and no more 29s!

Never!

Not me. I own Smith and Wesson and am underwater with it.

Trump needs to reopen the bullet making factory closed by Obama.

The last Dept I worked for had around 20 N frames from the 50's and early 60's.

That's why I bought my 66. You ever pack an N frame for 12 hours ;-/

You got that right.

And I’m not even husky.

I’ve never been a collector but I did pick up the three main 29 models, just because I so admire the terrific design and workmanship from the Smith guys of that period.

When America was America!

They never give up

Let's just hope that the next SCOTUS strikes down all the anti 2nd stuff here in California and elsewhere

I should add that the WA State Patrol at the time had the most beautiful N frames. One thought was that when they ran out of bullets, they could use the gun as a club :-)
