Russia Unveils 1st Image of New Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

Russia unveiled the first image of a new super-heavy thermonuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile, the RS-28 Sarmat, on October 23. The Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau in the city of Miass, located in Chelyabinsk Oblast in the Ural Mountains region, posted a declassified picture of the prospective new missile on its website. Accompanying the picture was a short statement signed by the missile’s chief designers, V. Degtar and Y. Kaverin:

In accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government ‘On the State Defense Order for 2010 and the planning period 2012-2013,’ the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau was instructed to start design and development work on the Sarmat. In June 2011, the Bureau and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a state contract for the Sarmat’s development. The prospective strategic missile system is being developed in order to assuredly and effectively fulfill objectives of nuclear deterrent by Russia’s strategic forces.

Russia’s newest super heavy liquid-propelled thermonuclear ICBM reportedly can carry ten heavy or 15 (some sources say 16) lighter warheads. The RS-28 Sarmat is expected to enter service with Russia’s Strategic Missile Force by 2020, replacing Soviet era RS-36M ICBMs. (Russia plans to retire all Soviet-era ICBMs and replace them with new weapon systems by 2022.)

They did not say how it might defeat all anti ballistic missile defenses. I am sure team 0bama is already on top of it though.

Don’t worry, in the new Cold War all the Mexican indigenous people we are re-populating our country with will have no problem countering this threat with their amazing cognitive skills and enormous background of advanced cryogenic engine technology, nuclear weapons optimization and superior guidance/navigation & controls technology.

But does Russia allow transgenders to serve though? That’s the critical question and if they don’t we should go to war with them.

Thank goodness one of Obama’s first actions in Office back in 2008 was to cease any new Nuclear Weapon Development.

How the hell did we get to a point where Democrats have us losing wars to knuckle-dragging throat slicers from the 7th century but are about to draw us into a nuclear war with Russia over who-gives-a-fk Syria just because Vlad embarrassed them with their gay reset button.

Not just the Dems, GOPe’ers, too. The NeoCons want war with Russia even if means our annihilation. Pancreatic cancer is less dangerous than NeoCons with power.

When will we go back to the Monroe Doctrine and let the eastern hemisphere worry about itself?

The weapon with that mission is the hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV). Launched from an ICBM, it separates from the booster, then begins maneuvering, at extremely high speeds, towards the target. There isn’t an anti-missile system in existence that can intercept an HGV. Russian could (potentially) use that type of weapon to destroy our land-based missile defenses, clearing the way for a massive strike using ICBMs like the SS-27 and the SS-28.

BTW, this Russian modernization occurred after we signed the latest START treaty with Moscow. The chief architect of that agreement? Hillary Clinton. And while Russian upgrades its arsenal, our land-based ICBM force is still based on the 40-year-old Minuteman III. With some funding (and a little luck) we might see new ICBMs entering operational service in about 10 years.

One more thing: China may be even further ahead in the HGV race than Russia. Our program is probably 4-5 years behind, and all of our tests (to date) have ended in failure.

Ramjet warheads.

ICBM warheads enter the atmosphere at 15,000 mph-21,000mph. All they need are thrusters to maneuver them a little to foil non-nuclear ABM weapons that we possess. If we could get up Sprint/Spartan/nuclear patriots, then it wouldnt matter.

Liquid fuel.

This must be a mistake on the part of the author.

As far as I know there is no liquid fueled rocket that anybody would want to be within a mile of within 15mins after being topped off.

Which means their fancy pants ICBM can be preempted.

But I don't believe the Russians would be this dumb since they have already perfected solid fuel rocket technology.

While the US may be behind Russia and China on HGV technology, that does not matter. HGVs need to be rocketed into space before being deployed.

That makes them vulnerable in the boost phase.

However, I am certain the US leads both, substantially, in hypersonics in general.

The atmospheric stuff that can't be targeted by anything kinetic and can't be detected until it's too late.

More than likely this Russian liquid-fueled heavy-lift rocket will double as a space booster. Liquid-fuel doesn’t make sense for an ICBM these days.

The HGVs will be boosted into space from deep inside Russian or Chinese territory—beyond the reach of missile defenses. We would need a space-based platform to take them out, or send platforms like the B-2 or B-21 trolling over vast stretches of territory to take them out before launch.

Don’t be so certain we’re “leading in hypersonics” in general. This has not been a priority for the Obama Administration (imagine that) and our operational tests have been failures.

It has been a priority for US Defense suppliers. Most of it with their private funds.

Aerojet-Rocketdyne has made considerable advances, and their are others.

Good to hear, but (so far) that progress has not been reflected in the testing program. Obviously, not everything being done in the lab or on the range makes its way into the media. But HGV is a critical technology and we need to be at the front of the pack, not behind.

The fact that Aerojet is largely doing it on their own dime is depressing. Hopefully, there’s a ton of black program money that’s also supporting the effort, but Barry has willfully ignored our strategic platforms for eight years and HGV falls into that category. So, it’s no surprise Aerojet has had to dig into its own pocket to partially fund the effort.

On the other hand, there have been some rare successes, like the Boeing/USAF space plane, still circling the earth after 500+ days in LEO. Bet the boys in Beijing and Moscow spend a lot of time trying to figure out exactly what that craft (and its payload) are up to. Of course, the R&D for that project came under Bush #43, not Obama. Left up to Zero, the space plane would still be on the drawing board.
