Researchers Clear 'Patient Zero' From AIDS Origin Story

It's one of the biggest medical mysteries of our time: How did HIV come to the U.S.?

By genetically sequencing samples from people infected early on, scientists say they have figured out when and where the virus that took hold here first arrived. In the process, they have exonerated the man accused of triggering the epidemic in North America.

A team of researchers at the University of Arizona sequenced the HIV virus taken from Canadian flight attendant Gaetan Dugas, the man called "Patient Zero" in the best-selling book And the Band Played On, which chronicled the early days of the AIDS epidemic in America.

The scientists also sequenced the virus from eight other men infected with HIV during the 1970s. From these genetic codes, the scientists estimate HIV came to the U.S. from Haiti in 1970 or 1971, but it went undetected by doctors for years.

Give me a break. Perverts have always had a vast array of diseases due to the filthy lifestyles.

And they want us to ignore this stuff.

Are you kidding?

He was a French-Canadian flight steward who was doing 1,000 people per year, or something..!

He might not have been the first —almost certainly was not— but that faggy Energizer Bunny pushed it ahead...EONS..?!

Good luck finding “Patient Zero” in the next epidemic after open borders!

To be fair, every gay person in the various circles did their part.

If gays were as monogamous or sexually limited as heteros, HIV would never got to the size it was.

The history of HIV shows it has several waves from the jungles of Africa. Only when it got to population centers did it finally get out of Africa. From there it killed a handful here and there as heterosexual monogamy and drug use kept it tightly clustered. Once it hit the gay scene, like a wildfire.

Revisionist history. We know he wasn’t the first but he was the main instigator spreading the disease far and wide, as he admittedly had hundreds of sex partners a YEAR!

That’s what I was thinking.

All I have to say is.....it sure wasn’t a heterosexual that caused the AIDS epidemic!

I think most people discussing this issue of gay men exclusively spreading HIV is a bogus issue. What the CDC and the sexually knowledgeable community do know is that gay guys and bisexual guys were on the leading edge but the bisexuals spread it into the hetero community and to their wives and boy/girl friends. It got confusing rather quickly and, as noted, that is over and done with. Now we have to treat all who are infected and continue to teach how NOT to get the virus.

I agree that it was the bisexuals AND the Blood Banking Industry that spread it into the heterosexual community. But in the beginning, it was really only gays dying from it for several years. Trust me, I worked in the medical community at one of the largest hospitals in the country, in the early 80’s.

The first confirmed death from HIV/AIDS in North America was Robert Rayford, a teenager from Missouri. He died in 1969, but it was not until 1989 that examination of tissue samples showed that Rayford was HIV+ and had died of AIDS.

No, we don’t have to treat them. Their disease is not our obligation.

We should quarantine and isolate them.

How did HIV get into Haiti pre-1970? Were Haitians busy jetsetting out to Africa, or Africans immigrating to Haiti?

Of course there were wealthy Haitians then, and African diaspora UN junkets and so forth.

It still seems to me that Haitian-African travel was likely less than Westerner to Africa and then to Haiti travel.

And weren’t several of the Kaposi’s victims homos who had lived in the same beach house that Zero had frequented?

There was a reason why it was called GRID. Gay-Related Immune Deficiency.

Sorry, but gay men are indeed the main spreaders of the infection. Most of the people who are hetro who get it usually get it from sharing needles with, you guessed it, gays.

It is not at all confusing and teaching how not to get the virus is rather simple. Stop having anal sex in bathrooms with men you don't know.

If they would do that the spread would slow down to a crawl and then stop.
