SEATTLE (AP) — A toddler who died in a house fire was found with his dog and teddy bear next to him and authorities believe the dog tried to protect the boy, a spokesman for Spokane’s fire department said Saturday.

The dog, a terrier mixed breed, also died in the fire that broke out at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, said the spokesman, Brian Schaeffer.

I have detectors that ‘chirp’ and have perfectly fine batteries. This is when you need a lawyer to go after the companies that make the cheap detectors. I had 3 like that from a batch of 5. The company DIDNT CARE.
They replaced them after I paid to ship them back — with more that did the same thing !!
CCS or something like that

Have you noticed after 5 years the smoke detectors outside cover turn an ugly shade of brown? And it says “Do not paint” on them. LOL. I smell planned obsolescence.

The sinner will be separated from God. These two won’t be.

That thought should give folks some comfort. That’s all.

It’s a horrific story, and I thought this would offer another angle that isn’t so bad.

The parent were too cheap to replace the battery in the smoke detector. Now they have a dead child and Loyal dog.

Not too cheap, too stupid. Or a possibly druggie couple.

Batteries for a fire detector is less than a Big Mac or a pack of cigarettes.

And these so-called parents can probably vote.

So many lives that literally don't freakin' matter!

Agree — we ought to look for the best account possible. It isn’t wrong to ask WHY. A failed unit owned by a landlord who dragged his feet on fixing it?

Some houses are rented, keep in mind.

“Have you noticed after 5 years the smoke detectors outside cover turn an ugly shade of brown? And it says “Do not paint” on them. LOL. I smell planned obsolescence.”

The reason for this (I’m pretty certain) is that bromine is used as a fire retardant in the plastic. Having the plastic melt instead of catching fire might give it another critical minute to keep blaring in a fire.

Agreed Talisker. On EVERYTHING you stated.

We gave up with the damn detectors. They are a real PITA. We’ve not only tried pulling the batteries, but have replaced every single one only to have it happen again and again. We’ve yanked most of them by now. The ugly mounts remain so we can place them again if the house is sold.

To hard-asses: stop adding insult to injury!

From what I understand, that’s bromine used in the manufacturing of the plastic. It is particularly bad if the plastic is exposed to sunlight.

There’s a mix people whip up to restore the color of things like old computers. You basically make a kind of paste, smear it on the plastic, and expose the whole thing to UV light. While it makes the plastic a bit less rigid (nothing to *really* worry about ... but a good drop will crack the plastic), you can restore the item to its original color and it’ll look the day it did when it was manufactured.

Overall, I don’t think there is any planned obsolescence ... I do think it is a good idea to get new ones every few years just in case the smoke sensor loses its effectiveness.

I should have read through all of the comments before making mine :-). You are right, it’s the bromine :-).

What a weird, strange thing to say.
I rented, the first five years of my married life, and it never occurred to me to assume it was the landlord's obligation to worry about the safety of MY family. Never crossed my mind.

What a heavily condemnatory thing for you to say, especially when you don’t know what time line or event sequence is involved.

May God loom over you with an equal condemnation to what you mete out, until you learn better.

Ill-located, ill-suited units can be more trouble than they are worth. The story of the boy who cried wolf is instructive here.

It’s easy enough to say “oh, they should have figured out how to fix it themselves” but for those to whom a smoke detector might as well be magic, that’s kind of harsh. There are three kinds — ionization, optical smoke, and heat. Ionization is the only kind that is popularly sold in most places. I always supplemented mine with optical smoke. I had a friend who put up manually clock-wound, heat activated units in his house. I found out through trial and error that I needed to vacuum mine out because spiders and such were making their homes in and near them, leading to those blasted false alarms. None of the instructions I ever saw with them said “keep them vacuumed out.”

I hope the ones who judge from on high are plagued with their own false-alarm situations that result in an error on their part some day (though I would not wish a death or even property loss, I might wish a close call, leading to a confession of “But for the grace of God”).

I’m with publius too htrn

I rented and my safety was on me

I agree with publius

Landlord has no control over folks dismantling smoke detectors or sleeping in bed etc

He’d have to be as they say......criminally negligently

On a system if one goes out they all beep

Mine are stacked on my dresser for that right now

7

And they are hard wired too

But the backup batteries have to be good and some of mine are really high in stairlwell

All my boys can roof it or jump the window

Guest bedroom is 3 stories up above drive but has dormer too

I wouldn’t do it with young kids in the house

My youngest aged 9 now sleeps on sofa mostly in den on Apple TV with 150 pound Rottweiler by him

I’d say he’s good to go
