THE RUSSIAN aircraft carrier floating through the Channel in a show of Putin's naval might is a Soviet antique plagued by technical problems, it has been revealed.
The Admiral Kuznetsov, part of a fleet destined for Syria, was seen belching black smoke off the coast of Dover.
But while it looks daunting, the vast vessel is a relic of the Soviet era -- with the port side still bearing it's communist name - "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov".
The ship even has a tow boat running alongside waiting for it to grind to a stuttering halt.
Ex-Royal Navy officer Peter Roberts said: "There's nothing more depressing for a naval captain when he leaves home waters than to be escorted by a tug because even your commander in chief thinks you are going to break down."
The ship frequently has to return to port so its steam turbines can be repaired, and its piping system often freezes in colder waters.
The chance of pipes bursting is so high that the majority of cabins for the 1,690 strong crew are reportedly not supplied with running water.

I’ve watched videos in the past of the Kuznetsov under power and it did not smoke. Wonder if this extreme smoking is the result of recent maneuvers off Scotland? Developed some sort of mechanical issue? Would have thought it would return to Severomorsk for repairs?
Meanwhile, we've just spent untold billions on a carrier that can't launch planes, littoral combat ships with cracking hulls and a fighter aircraft that is outmatched by everything except cost.
But, hey, at least we have transgender troops! We're beating the Russians at this!
Right. Carriers will become obsolete when the concept of obtaining air superiority over huge swaths of ocean becomes obsolete, i.e. NEVER.

Seems to me if there was a towboat in case it breaks down there would have been a picture of it. I didn’t see any photographs of a towboat in this article.
Frigates are tough. Think how much damage an AC can take.
That will all be done with drones in the coming years. No need for giant slow ships with flight decks and massive crews.
Drones will be sea-based on tiny stealth ships. And also lighter air-based drones that can fly perpetually.
If you are gong to evaluate the Navy's wartime capabilities on peacetime maneuvers and exercises that you are being really stupid.
PS in wartime if the USN didn't know with fairly close proximity where that enemy attack sub was located THE CVBG WOULDN'T GO THERE.

There’s no more need to have manned combat aircraft and all the extra weight/drag that comes with it.
No need to have a carrier when you can stack 10X more drones in the same space and deliver the same fire power with 10X fewer men. While on a far stealtier, faster and more reduntant platform.
Instead of a carrier, you’ll have several smaller stealth ships from where drones fly in/out like bees. Some defending the ships and others hitting enemy targets. Automatically attacking, refueling and reloading like clockwork 24/7 until the enemy is dead

One Kooky Navy Captain and a amateur think CVN’s are obsolete. Do you know anything about real world Navy operations? Do you know about Anti Submarine Warfare? In a HOT war with China or Russian the first step would be to contain the sub threat BEFORE the CVBG and amphibious operation even start. In wartime losing contact with an enemy attack sub would preclude any CVBG operations in the area of probability of the sub. Do you know what an area of probability is?

We cannot assure defense against latest generation of hypersonic missiles. Both China and Russia HSM’s are achieving speeds of Mach 10+
Throw in tactical nuclear war heads like those on the “Sunburn” missile series, and it’s a carrier captain’s worse nightmare.
Our military planners, contractors and DARPA have given our navy incredible CV defense capability.
However, adversaries have a much easier job of destroying a 1.5+ Billion dollar vessel with a precise lethal multi-million dollar hypersonic missile.

Carriers are the naval version of army big tank obsolescence.
