Biden brags he drove 160 mph, but did he?

“I like speed.”

So says Vice President Joe Biden in a clip from an upcoming episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, where the two take the Vice President’s 1967 Chevrolet Corvette for a spin.

Biden tells Leno the car was a surprise wedding gift from his father, who worked at a car dealership at the time.

Biden is the car's only owner, and the well-maintained green convertible looks to be in mint condition, with a four-speed manual and a rebuilt 327 cu-in V8. Leno says it's a 300 hp version, but a decal on the air cleaner says it has 350 hp. According to the Hagerty Price Guide, it could be worth close to $100,000 today.

Due to security concerns, Biden isn’t allowed to drive it much these days. The jaunt with Jay was just the third time he’s been behind the wheel in seven years, and the ride took place at a secure Secret Service training facility.

Hmf. I had a 69 SC Rambler that would blow his car out it’s “tailpipe. Wish I still had it.”

I haven’t seen one of those in decades. Guy I knew in his school had one. We called it “The Rambler from Hell” he was very skilled at setting a car up and it was way better than stock. There was something deeply gratifying about watching some rich kid with a Vette or GTO get spanked by this econobox.

The Hyundai isn’t using a Carter AFB carburetor, but advanced aluminum engines with four valves per cylinder (versus two on the Chevy small block), advanced electronic fuel injection and variable valve timing. FWICS, the stock carburetor on the Chevy 300-hp engine was a four-barrel.

No way is he taking a mid year Vette to 160 on a small block. It would take a little work, some gearing and despite its looks a little aero help. I had a 69 C3 with a small block and although the speedometer went to 160, there was no way the car would have with a mouse motor without some serious work.
Maybe an LT1 with the right gearing or a 427.

Definitely was a sleeper. The original paint job was great, too.

Base trans was a 3-speed manual but not many like that were sold. Likewise, few buyers opted for the lowest price Powerglide 2-speed when they ordered an automatic on C2 (1963-1967) Corvettes.

But in any event, the top gear ratio on the 3-speed manual was nearly the same as the wide ratio 4-speed - roughly 1:1. (Neither were overdrive in top gear.)

The rear axle ratio makes more of a difference to top speed than the slight variations in top gear ratios of the transmissions on most cars of that era.

“No way would a 327 (or 350), do 160 unless it was seriously reworked.”

Not true at all. I’ve had several cars including a 1996 2.5L Acura TL that could do 160. I even got clocked at 147 after slowing down outside Douglas, WY late one night.

Wife has a 2015 BMW x1 i35 with an inline 3.0L turbo charged 300hp engine. It will do 160 without breathing hard.

What a disgusting and pure example of an entrenched piece of shite politician who actually has influence .....imagine being able to “ORDER” your own protection and whatever you want ....the balance is way out of whack ...to be able to work for our republic is an honor long forgotten....these political seniors forget this because of the world(false as it is) they immerse themselves in. Biden is one the purest examples of the need for term limits....not taking away from the lazy electorate who know nothing....show the lazy bastards the money they can keep by paying attention and things would change.

Remember that the way horsepower was measured was changed in 1972 and the fact that a vehicle must dyno the horsepower it is advertised now.

In the past, ratings were made up, at best.

A Vette has better aero, but 160 mph isn’t very believable.

They hadn't figured out ground effects yet, those cars looked like they were four wheel drive. Plenty of "suspension travel".

I'll bet it gets pretty "floaty" over 100.

Yes, roughly.

The M-20 Muncie wide ratio 4th gear is exactly 1:1.

The Muncie M62 and M64 3-speeds have top gear ratios of 1.04:1 and 1:1 respectively. Not sure which of the two were in the 1963-1967 Corvette. And I’m not going to look it up tonight.

But, yes, the top ratios are ROUGHLY equivalent to the M-20.

I took my LS400 up to 130 approaching Nashville and chickened out. It would do 160, but no way for me!
