I've read that it would cost a few billion. Not much really. Pocket change to the feds.

I'm sure they've probably spent far more teaching makeup artistry to pubescent boys that like to dress up like madonna.

There, now. Don’t you feel better? *SNORT*

what nonsense. NASA just put something out recently that solar storm activity will be virtually nothing for about ten years...We watch aurora from our bedroom window so I was very sad to read that it was going away for awhile.

This is about the war they are planning with Russia.

Oh, just in time.

We can go to Home Depot and buy the kit. I hear it only costs billions of dollars and takes more than a decade to install !

Now ? NOW he wants to do something about this ?

If we experienced another Carrington Event, the recovery for some areas would take years. Most power plants with the exception of nukes cannot start without power from the grid. The main transformers at power plants are long lead time items. They are built on order only. Without them no power gets to the grid. Those would be susceptible to a Carrington Event.

Triage would have to conducted on a national scale. In a just in time society we would pay dearly for a society which depends on regular deliveries.

This is a picture of the type of rail car used to deliver main transformers. You'll need refineries to operate to produce fuel to power railroads. You'll need power plants to operate refineries. You'll end up with innumerable catch 22 situations.

The transformer goes between the two rail car halves. These are not the little transformers you see at substations.

Solar event? Would an EMP event produce the same result?

Generally no. Solar events will affect nothing but long lines, blowing up transformers on the grid. They are very low frequency magnetic field fluctuations which is why the long line is needed to generate current.

EMP is the opposite, extremely high frequency electric fields. EMP can also contain lower frequencies but not significant magnetic fields. The high frequency electric fields can be picked up by very short antennas and damage all sorts of electronics including semiconductors.

They are both serious threats but different and require different mitigation. The best way to mitigate EMP is missile defense.

Ever heard of the Carrington Event?

If something like this occurred today, it quite likely wouldn’t be pretty.

In light of this information, the Executive Order seems, well, curious....

It would cost billions to protect the electric grid from an EMP event.

The grid is generally not vulnerable to EMP. EMP will do far more damage to electronics. Solar events will not damage electronics other than those directly attached to long lines (i.e. nothing in your house).

The most recent forecast from the Space Weather Prediction Center is that solar cycle 24 will be of below-average intensity, and that it will peak in May 2013.

The Sun's Great Conveyor Belt has slowed to a record-low crawl, according to research by NASA solar physicist David Hathaway. "It's off the bottom of the charts," he says. "This has important repercussions for future solar activity."

""The slowdown we see now means that Solar Cycle 25, peaking around the year 2022, could be one of the weakest in centuries," says Hathaway." (from link just above)

Obama appears to be an idiot.

Thank you for referencing that article milford421. Please note that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

Patriots beware !

Regarding executive orders, the Supreme Court had clarified in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, 1952 that such orders do not have the force of law unless they are legislatively supported by Congress.

So an appropriate edit of the article’s title is as follows.

"Obama Signs Order Congress Passes Bill To Prepare Nation For Solar Storms"

H O W E V E R ...

Since Congress must be able to justify any bill that it makes with its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers, the problem is that the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to address the surface reason for Obama’s solar order.

So corrupt Congress is once again letting last-term Obama get away with stealing 10th Amendment-protected state powers.

And as the article indicated, Obama’s solar order is probably an attempt by the corrupt Washington cartel to unconstitutionally expand the unconstitutionally big federal government’s powers.

In fact, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson had warned patriots to be on their guard against the corrupt feds expanding their powers in relatively unnoticeable ways.

Remember in November !

Patriots need to support Trump / Pence by also electing a new, state sovereignty-respecting Congress that will not only work within its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers to support Trump’s vision for making America great again for everybody, but will also put a stop to unconstitutonal federal taxes and likewise unconstitutional inteference in state affairs as evidenced by lawless Obama’s unconstitutional executive order.

Note that such a Congress will also probably be willing to fire state sovereignty-ignoring activist justices.

The federal study done a few years ago says there will be extensive damage to the grid.

Obama is planning on ISIS to knock out our power grids. This gives him an excuse to blame it on something else, so he can cancel the national election.

An EMP can be engineered to create more grid damage. But low frequencies require much more energy than high frequencies to induce currents. To get transformer-damaging currents with EMP would be quite difficult.

Technically no.

A solar-caused event, a Carrington event, does NOT produce the same three pulses of a nuclear-caused EMP.

A solar event can be very high induced voltages, but compared to nuclear EMP is very slow rise. Presumed also that a solar event induces long wave antennae (long wires) far better than transistors.

Nuclear EMP has three total pulses, the worst of which for modern electronics is very fast rise voltage. It is too fast for ‘lightning arrest or’ style protection.

Shielded electronics can readily survive (in theory) either type of EMP, and your vehicle would likely only endure blown fuses from a big solar event.

It’s easy to shield items from either type. Put items it a cardboard box and put the box in a metal trash can. Small items like a crank radio can be placed in a box and then placed inside a Charles Chips can.

If no voltage can be induced, EMP cannot do harm.

BTW, a microwave’s not the right place. Wavelength of nuclear EMP is so short, it’ll get in.

Kinda moot though since nuclear EMP will absolutely disrupt the power grid, and therefore shutdown our just in time supply chains.

Our civilization can survive a solar event; not so much a nuclear one. Worst case scenarios are bleak.

Keep a 3 day bag, 100 mile shoes, and self defense firearms ‘with’ you at all times for now.
