I call it the “Trump Effect.” The useless German government is trying to finally meet their obligations under NATO thanks to Trump hitting them over the head for being a bunch of lazy-ass weasels.
To Germans reading this, I highly recommend you find some piano wire, a tree, and introduce Merkel to the send-off that Italians gave Mussolini.

Trump was criticized when he pointed out that the NATO allies defense budgets weren’t at the levels pledged. Looks like he may be already having an effect.

Trump has made it clear that NATO would not be able to depend on the U.S. under a President Trump. So it could be as simple as Merkel thinks Trump may win.

More likely it means they'll move some job training and remedial education programs from one column in the ledger to another, put some Bundeswehr officer with political connections in charge of the same people and same programs, then say, "look at what a huge increase in spending there's been".
In the mean time, they'll continue spending the funds that went to those programs on other things since they've found an excuse to increase spending and blaming that increase on the needs of the Bundeswehr.

Merkel, despite the destruction your MAD liberalism has brought to your country, it is still a STRONG country and can afford to pay all arrearages it did not pay back when it was NOT paying 2%. I guess you’ve figured out your going to be dealing with Trump in a couple months.
