Face it: Property taxes are forcing Illinoisans out of their homes

Pardess Mitchell is watching her community crumble.

She and her husband have lived in Lake County for 16 years. They pay more in property taxes than they do on their mortgage. The tax bill is $15,000 a year on a house they bought for $227,000 in 2013.

“They’re taxing us out of the neighborhood. They’re pushing us out. They’re pushing us out of our homes and communities,” she said. “If it continues this way we’ll have to leave.”

A Paul Simon Public Policy Institute poll released Oct. 10 revealed nearly half of registered Illinois voters said they would leave the state if they could. Many have left already.

Take Alex Schmidt. He was born and raised in Illinois. He never thought his first child would be born a Texan.

But in May, Schmidt and his wife left Illinois for Houston. He said taxes drove them out. He couldn’t take another hike in his property tax bill: It was $12,000 on a Highland Park home.

“As soon as I had to get a property tax attorney a light bulb went off,” he said. “What am I doing?”

Outside Houston, the Schmidts live in a house 50 percent larger with a smaller property tax bill than their Illinois home. The schools are even better than what they left behind. And Texas doesn’t have an income tax. So Alex got a raise.

Illinois has a massive problem with residents leaving the state for greener pastures.

Over the last decade, Bureau of Labor Statistics data show Illinois has experienced a net loss of 290,000 working-age adults to out-migration. But many Illinois politicians refuse to acknowledge it’s a problem.

...

Illinoisans pay among the highest property taxes in the country. It’s not surprising that some are deciding to move as a result.

The more people that leave Illinois, the smaller the tax base. Yet politicians insist on spending even more money and raising taxes to make up the loss.

At least NH doesn’t have an income tax or a sales tax.

That number is a "net". They count illegals, so if you take out illegals, Illinois has lost over 10%, about 1,300,000 people.

They did pick up over a million Mexicans. Enough to make Chicago the 3d largest Mexican city in the world after L.A. and Mexico City.

“The state owns your house and is charging you rent.”

1. FTFY.

2. This is literally true in 99% of the USA because the state holds the actual title deed to your property and you just get an “abstract of title”...meaning that you have a document that looks and acts like a title deed but when it really matters, it isn’t a title deed.

But too many of them bring their voting habits with them and then wonder why the area that they moved to is going to hell-in-a-handbasket as well ...

This is the price you rich crackuhs pay for your white privilege. You want to live away from the ‘diverse’ neighborhoods but by God you’re going to pay for the diverse neighborhoods.

$15 thousand on a $225 thousand house?

Just damn...I checked on my property taxes, and mine are about $7K per year, taxable value of $275K. My escrow is approaching 50% of my monthly house payment.

Not going down anytime soon, either. Latest Zillow just passed $350K. My area is booming, centrally located between Plano, Las Colinas, downtown Dallas, and Arlington. We're in the Coppell ISD, which is prominently featured on advertisements.

It's too congested for me now, when we move depends on my son, who just started HS. I think he wants to stay four years (we've lived here his entire life), but the competition is fierce in numerous activities. 80+ boys tried out for the freshman basketball team.

15k in taxes on a 227k house is inSANE !

Illinois property taxes are high, but not that high. We aren't getting the full story. If the house is actually worth that, I can't see paying more than $7.5K.

I was wondering if anyone would point out the “....because” part of this story. Property taxes have skyrocketed because both the state and the cities are upside down to the tune of billions of dollars owed to those grafting public employee unions. Hard as the pols might try to suck that extra money out of the Illinois taxpayer, they’ll never get out of the hole on this because they’re driving taxpayers out - less taxpayers = a higher tax bill for the individuals who remain. Chicago homeowners were hit with something over a 30% increase in their property taxes last year for this very reason. Recently, Rahmbo has extended the extortion to a ridiculous increase in the city’s water rates to help pay the pension bill. He’s not just going after property owners, now. Every citizen pays a water bill - except the homeless, of course. This house of cards is very close to complete collapse, but no one seems willing or able to make the public employee unions share any of the pain from a piss poor Obana economy and Wall Street’s plunder of pension funds through market manipulation.

And since Chicago gives the Democrats a supermajority in the legislature, nothing can be done to stop it other than what Gov. Rayner is trying to do. Madigan will not even let common sense legislation to address the problem come to the floor for debate.

We need divine intervention...

Illinois Might Adopt One Of The Highest Income Taxes In The Nation

http://www.forbes.com/sites/thetaxfoundation/2016/04/19/illinois-might-adopt-one-of-the-highest-income-taxes-in-the-nation

“Tax day may be behind us, but Illinois residents could be working longer to pay their state taxes in future years under legislation unveiled by House Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang (D)—a proposal that would see the top rate soar from 3.75 to 9.75%. Were the tax increase adopted, Illinois would fall from 23rd to 48th on the Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index, above only New York and California.”
