Syrian MiG-29 fighter jets performing combat missions with Russian made R-77 missiles

Syrian Air Force Mikoyan MiG-29 (NATO reporting name: Fulcrum) fighter jets are performing sorties with medium-range air-to-air missiles of the R-77 (AA-12 Adder) family. Syrian Radio & TV Agency has broadcasted a video showing the attaching of an air-launched weapon of this type to a MiG-29 plane.

The video shows a R-77-family missile (most probably, an export version of the missile, i.e. RVV-SD) being carried by an under-wing AKU-170E ejection unit of a MiG-29 plane.

The video has confirmed media reports that Russia repaired and upgraded several Syrian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jets.

According to data of public sources, the fighter jets have received an advanced avionics suite, which has allowed R-77 family missiles and KAB-500 guided air bombs to enter the planes’ weapon suite.

According to experts, the upgrade work has allowed Syrian MiG-29 fighter jets to come close to Russian MiG-29SMT planes in terms of their operational characteristics.

According to data for 2016 of the US Military Balance journal, Syria’s Air Force operates 30 MiG-29A and MiG-29SM fighter jets and MiG-29UB combat trainers.

The Planes were probably upgraded with Russian Pilots as well.

It seems ‘broadcasted’ has wormed its way into acceptable usage. How sad the unnecessary verbiage this has costed.

Those will come in handy if ISIS decides to build an Air Force.

Yom Kipper 1973. Israel took out all of them. No losses. Israel could do it again and I think the Russkies would be too scared to react. Assad just might be the one to keep everyone in line but after he’s weakened. He had no problem with christians.

AA-12 is their equivalent of the AIM-120, hence the unofficial nickname “AMRAAMSKI.”

Obviously, a weapon like the AA-12 is virtually useless in a civil war, against rebels on the ground, but that’s not why Moscow has provided the upgrade. They plan to send the Syrians on missions against U.S. aircraft operating over Syria and try to shoot down our jets. Syrians might also use them in operations against the IAF.

Tactically, the Syrians are incompetent, and that’s putting it mildly. Having an active radar missile is a major upgrade for them, but unless you know how to employ it proficiently (while minimizing your own exposure), it won’t make much of a difference.

But don’t worry: Barry’s got this one figured out. It has been reported that U.S. fighters must “relocate” if they come within 20 miles of Russian jets and that retreat order will now probably be extended to Syrian aircraft as well.

Gotta wonder what ISIS targets are worth a $100K missile.
Mostly, I’d be using large quantities of iron bombs. Maybe see if there are a few Bears left that can deliver bombs by the truckload?

My favorite unnecessary modern verbage? “Go ahead and...”. It’s crept into the English language in recent years, along with it’s past tense version “Went ahead and...”. Does this annoy anyone else?

When I’m writing, I overuse “just” and go back during edit and remove it, as it’s just not necessary. Another tip —
avoid adverbs. If you use an adverb, it means your verb may not be strong enough. Pick a stronger verb and dump the adverb. Less is more.

Where are the US fighters going to come from? The closest place they can take off and land on land is Saudi Arabia. Putting a carrier group in the med should make for an interesting confrontation.

How do those missiles fly with those weird egg crate fins against the flow?

Not improbably that there are some well trained Syrian
MiG drivers and this raises the cost to Israel of any
incursion into Syrian airspace (such as a mission to
Iran nuclear weapons/fissile materials sites).

Those are supersonic steering veins, Space x uses the same thing (just bigger) on the Falcon 9 to steer it back to landing

Watch ‘em work here ...

Nothing "acceptable" about it.
last time I checked it was deemed a 'bastardized' variant of proper English.
Like 'strategery.'

Nope. More like amuse than annoy.

Life is too short.
