Mayor Ras J. Baraka has a message for the country's gun manufacturers: start employing safe weapons technologies, or the City of Newark will take its business elsewhere.
Surrounded by clergy and bi-partisan groups on the steps of Newark City Hall Thursday afternoon, Baraka called on all New Jersey mayors to convene before purchasing additional weapons for their law enforcement agencies and create a list of manufacturers who are listening to their concerns, chiefly: safer gun distribution practices and technologies.
"We put our money in places, with people who support what we think is right for our community," Baraka told NJ Advance Media following the press conference. "You're talking about over 560 municipalities in the State of New Jersey. If we can get a quarter of them to say, 'Look, we agree with this, and we're not going to purchase bullets, guns or whatever from these four or five manufactures until (they) do what we ask them to do.'"
One such technology is the "smart gun," a firearm programmed to be used only by the owner.
State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), who joined the mayor Thursday, sponsored a bill last year that attempted to repeal a 2002 law requiring New Jersey firearms dealers to sell only smart guns three years after they are available on the market.
Because of the restrictiveness of the 2002 law, some 2nd Amendment activists attempted to thwart the advancement of smart gun technology, according to reports.
In a 2014 interview with MSNBC, Weinberg said would introduce a new bill to repeal the 2002 law if the National Rifle Association would agree not to stand in the way of smart gun technology.

Another way a firearm could be "smart" is that it would transmit the view down the barrel to a nearby phone, so you could aim the firearm without exposing yourself from cover. A better version of that system would allow you to identify a target, and at the exact moment you were best aligned to hit the target the trigger would be activated. The aiming system could include compensation for wind, ballistics, etc. Such a product already exists.
An even more sophisticated system could have built in active recoil suppression to allow multiple shots without as much re-aiming.
And of course the ultimate "smart" gun might be one you can send downstairs to look around while you are upstairs looking at a remote display. Another version of that type of "smart" gun might be able to fly through the sky under the control of its owner, in case it was necessary to get rid of a pesky wild boar in the garden, or deal with the coyote that has been eating chickens.
Slingshots are illegal in People’s Republic of Zoo Jersey
Think of the liability!
Newark PD has 1100 employees and probably fewer than 100% are issued sidearms -- gun manufacturers do not make big margins on LE sales. Look at the numbers. This is just a stupid, meaningless gesture. Mostly stupid.
ummajupadingolingo?
ummajupadingolingo, “has more Chins than a Chinese telephone book!” or something like that :^)
(with apologies to Joan Rivers...)
Pretty much everything that might be fun for a normal person to do is illegal in New Jersey.
(I said "normal". The state only recently got around to outlawing bestiality! http://www.philly.com/philly/news/politics/Bestiality_finally_outlawed_in_New_Jersey.html)
replace safe with unreliable.
safe cervixes.
safe willies.
good ideas. much more pressing than this.
I need to re-boot my Smith & Wesson.
I will also cease all business with any gun manufacturer, online gun store, or regular store making or selling these unreliable tools.
Even if NJ repeals their disgusting law, they can just pass it again once the cat is out of the bag. The only acceptable "safe" gun is the one that goes BANG every time you pull the trigger. That's why: (1) I love my Glock, and (2) if I am forced into a "Smart"Gun, I will immediately disable the electronic feature to make it reliable and thus safe.
LOL! That’s right. Force it on NJ public employees first. Let THEM be the guinea pigs. To include security for public officials.
Um, did any of these clowns ask the police officers who would carry said guns what they think?
“They will do what we tell them to do, we pay their salaries.”
Uh yeah, good luck with that. You don’t do things like this when law enforcement is having one of the worst staffing crisis in history. People won’t walk, they are already walking. Thanks Ferguson Effect.
Time to give these asswipes the Ronnie Barrett ESAD treatment.
I wonder how much money Rastas has invested in this ripoff.
My booger picker aka trigger finger and its backup on the other hand make all my weapons smart .....
Yes on the ESAD comment.
Incrementalism creeps and their agendas continue. An eternal fight against these sorts is always on. Educate your future generations.
Stay Safe Bub....
Would an EMP make them inoperable?
If the City of Newark wants to buy crap technology, then their police force is the loser.
Getting nailed by criminals is a pretty high price to pay for some imbecile mayor who doesn’t know his butt from a hole in the ground and wants to appear “modern.”
Sorry, policemen, you lose to the Left.
Again.
My understanding is all electronics are susceptible to EMP unless high dollar mil spec protection is used or they are stored in a faraday cage etc...
