Seventh Street or Calle Siete? Spanish street signs debated [Allentown PA]
Associated Press ^ | Oct 7, 2016 3:39 PM EDT | Michael Rubinkam

When Hispanic residents of downtown Allentown want to grab a bite, get their hair cut or shop for groceries, they often head to Seventh Street — but they don’t call it that. To them, it’s Calle Siete.

A councilman wants to honor the city’s growing Hispanic population by installing decorative Spanish-language street signs on one of its main commercial thoroughfares, where a profusion of Latino-owned restaurants, barbershops and corner stores reflects the rapidly changing demographics of the state’s third-largest city. Hispanics now represent nearly half the population of 120,000.

But where Democratic Councilman Julio Guridy and other residents and business owners on Seventh Street see the Calle Siete signs as a small but long overdue gesture of respect, others call the proposal unnecessary and divisive.

Critics also say the proposal for the signs is a distraction from issues of poverty, drugs, crime and lack of opportunity in Allentown's urban core. …

No Irish people would ever have demanded that Seventh Street become “An Seachtú Sráid”.

I used to drive through Allentown frequently back in the 1970’s when it was still an American city.

Same here for paesans.

over 300k Italians on Staten Island and the closest we come to an Italian named street is Fr. Capadanno Blvd.

Half my friends speak fluent Italian and many have relatives in Italy. None speak English with an italian accent.

They are AMERICANS. They teach their kids italian as a second language. That’s nice.

But they are AMERICANS. Spanish need to GET THAT!!

unbelievable.

I would have picked “Salir de nuestra país”, but that’s just me.

A councilman wants to honor the city’s growing Hispanic population by installing decorative Spanish-language street signs [...]

That's how it begins. First it's "wants to honor," then it's "bows to pressure from," and finally it's "has no choice but to accede to demands by."

And what do they mean by "decorative?" Does each sign bear a little "Frito Bandito" riding atop it?

Regards,

Somebody ought to remind the politicians that this is STILL AMERICA, no matter how much they have emasculated it.

I wonder how many Allentown Hispanics are illegal residents. Boy would ICE have a field day I they could do their job.

Billy Joel. Are you going to sing your song in Spanish?

This is good thing. As I learned driving in Los Angeles, once the signs stop being in English turn around and get out of there ASAP+. Same one would do with a MLK street.

I think this is a little different, these people aren’t from the same country, when you look at other areas where these type of alternative signage was displayed, it was only to honor their geographical origin and not reidentify the street.

Examples: little Vietnam, China Town, etc...

Not for much longer, I’m afraid.
If we do not elect Trump, we become North Mexico like the Bush family has been aiming for.
